Anya Taylor-Joy Just Became Middle-earth’s Newest Elf, and Her ‘Hunt for Gollum’ Character Sounds Absolutely Lethal
The road back to Middle-earth keeps getting more star-studded by the month. ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum’ is the long-awaited live-action return to J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy world, helmed by Andy Serkis, who will once again step into the motion-capture suit to bring Gollum back to life. The screenplay comes from the Oscar-winning team of Philippa Boyens and Fran Walsh, joined by Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou, with Peter Jackson, Walsh, and Boyens producing.
The film is shaping up to be a genuine reunion of beloved franchise talent alongside a wave of exciting new faces. Returning cast members include Ian McKellen as Gandalf, Elijah Wood as Frodo, and Lee Pace as King Thranduil, while newcomers Kate Winslet, Jamie Dornan, and Leo Woodall join the ensemble as entirely new characters. Dornan steps into the iconic role of Aragorn, a part made legendary by Viggo Mortensen in Peter Jackson’s original trilogy.
Now the already impressive cast has gained one of the most magnetic performers of her generation. As announced by The Hollywood Handle and confirmed by Warner Bros., Anya Taylor-Joy has joined the production as Seren, a Sindar Elf of the Woodland Realm described as “a trusted and lethal agent of King Thranduil.” The character reveal came accompanied by a striking official image showing Seren as an archer silhouetted against the cavernous dark of what appears to be Mirkwood, bow in hand and ready for action.
Seren is an entirely new character conceived specifically for this film, with her name drawn from the Welsh word for “star.” The story is set in the stretch of time between Bilbo’s birthday party in ‘The Fellowship of the Ring’ and the Fellowship’s arrival at the Mines of Moria, following Aragorn and Gandalf as they seek out Gollum for information about Bilbo’s ring. Given that Gollum was held by the elves of Mirkwood during this very period, Seren’s connection to Thranduil’s court could place her directly at the heart of how Gollum’s escape unfolds.
The casting marks Taylor-Joy’s third role in a major Warner Bros. franchise, following her turns in ‘Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga’ and the ‘Dune’ films. She has already proven her range as an action star through ‘Furiosa’, and with ‘Dune: Part Three’ arriving later this year, she is rapidly becoming one of the defining presences in big-budget genre cinema.
‘The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum’ is scheduled to arrive in theaters worldwide on December 17, 2027. It is not the only Middle-earth project in development, as ‘The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past’ is also on the way, written by Boyens, Stephen Colbert, and Peter McGee. With the franchise expanding on multiple fronts, there has rarely been a more exciting time to be a Tolkien fan, and Taylor-Joy’s arrival as the lethal Elven agent Seren only raises the stakes further. Whether you think she is inspired casting or you are still on the fence, one thing seems certain: once audiences get their first real look at her in the Woodland Realm, the debate is going to be everywhere. What do you think of Anya Taylor-Joy stepping into ‘The Hunt for Gollum’ as Seren, and does the idea of a brand-new elf character in her corner of the story have you more or less excited for what Serkis is building?
