Hannah Grace’s ‘Icebreaker’ Is Coming to Netflix and BookTok Has Already Lost Its Mind

Hockey romance and figure skating drama are two things that rarely collide on screen, but Netflix is betting big that audiences are ready for exactly that kind of collision. The streamer has officially ordered a series adaptation of ‘Icebreaker,’ the debut novel from author Hannah Grace, announcing the project at the Banff World Media Festival. It is a move that signals just how seriously the platform is chasing the massive romance reader audience that has made book-to-screen adaptations one of the most reliable pipelines in prestige television.

The novel centers on Anastasia Allen, an aspiring figure skater, and Nate Hawkins, the captain of the hockey team at the University of California at Maple Hills. When one of the university’s two rinks is disabled, both teams are forced to collaborate on sharing ice time, and the tension between these two competitive athletes quickly turns into something far more complicated than a scheduling dispute. It is the kind of premise that sounds deceptively simple but carries enormous emotional weight in Grace’s telling, which is exactly why it resonated so deeply with readers.

The novel has sold over two million copies and became a sensation on BookTok, making it one of the most recognizable titles in the hockey romance subgenre. It has since been translated into 24 languages and distributed across 34 countries, a global footprint that made a screen adaptation feel less like a question of if and more like a question of when. Netflix clearly decided the moment had arrived.

The streamer has attached Amanda Lasher as showrunner, with Jade Bartlett having written the pilot and set to write additional episodes alongside Lasher. Alex Cooper of ‘Call Her Daddy’ fame will produce the series through Unwell Productions, alongside Matt Kaplan and Meena Lefevre. The creative team brings together voices with deep roots in both prestige drama and the kind of emotionally charged storytelling that Grace’s fanbase will be watching closely. Lasher, whose credits include ‘Gossip Girl’ and ‘Togetherness,’ described herself as a lifelong fan of the genre, saying in a statement that she loves the genre and that it has been a joy working with Bartlett, the team at Unwell, and Netflix to bring Grace’s beloved novel to the screen.

Jinny Howe, Netflix’s head of scripted series for the US and Canada, noted that the streamer has a long history of turning beloved romance novels into massive global hits and described ‘Icebreaker’ as the perfect next chapter for them. That confidence is not unfounded. With ‘Heated Rivalry’ on HBO Max and ‘Off Campus’ on Prime Video, Netflix is now officially jumping onto the hockey romance adaptation bandwagon, and they are doing so with one of the biggest titles the genre has ever produced.

Cooper first teased the announcement on her Instagram Story, writing alongside a photo of the novel, “BookTok girlies, I have some exciting news for you…” before confirming her role as producer and simply adding, “SCREAMING.” That energy pretty much summarizes how the fandom has reacted to the news. A premiere date has not yet been set, with the show having just been announced, meaning audiences likely won’t see it on the streamer until late 2027 or even 2028. That is a long wait, but for a fandom this devoted, the countdown has already begun. Whether you are Team Anastasia, Team Nate, or just here for the rinkside tension, now is the perfect time to share who you are most excited to see cast in the lead roles.
