Inde Navarrette Trades Her Dream Marvel Role for a Different X-Men Legacy
The MCU’s mutant reboot has been the industry’s worst kept secret for months, with casting rumors swirling every time a new actor got spotted meeting with Marvel executives. Fans have spent the better part of the year fan casting every rising star in Hollywood into iconic roles like Storm, Cyclops, and Mystique, waiting for Marvel Studios to finally confirm who would suit up first.
Much of that speculation centered on ‘Obsession’ breakout Inde Navarrette, whose performance in the film turned her into one of the industry’s most talked about young actresses. Marvel Studios broke the internet at D23 by announcing her casting as Rogue in the upcoming ‘X-Men’ reboot, with Anna Paquin having previously portrayed the character across four earlier films. Navarrette’s turn in ‘Obsession’ has grossed almost 500 million dollars worldwide against a budget of just 750,000 dollars, and she is expected to be part of this fall’s awards conversation for the performance.
According to DiscussingFilm, the film is currently set for release in theaters on May 5, 2028. Kevin Feige revealed the inaugural members of the mutant team at D23, with the lineup including Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Kit Connor as Cyclops, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Christopher Abbott as Professor X, and Maya Boyd as Storm. Adam Driver was also unveiled as the film’s villain, Mister Sinister.
The twist in Navarrette’s casting is that Rogue was not her first pick. Navarrette had spoken publicly about wanting to play Mystique rather than Rogue before the reveal came down. She had reportedly met with director Jake Schreier about the shapeshifting role, which was previously brought to life by Rebecca Romijn and Jennifer Lawrence. It seems Marvel had other plans for her, slotting her instead into the Southern belle role that made Paquin a franchise fixture for nearly a decade.
Driver’s addition to the cast carries its own weight, given how long his name has circulated around the MCU. He was previously one of the names floated for Mister Fantastic before that role went to Pedro Pascal. Speaking about finally joining the franchise, Driver said at D23 that he and Feige had “been talking for years about me joining the MCU.”
Jake Schreier, fresh off directing ‘Thunderbolts*’, is helming this new chapter for the mutants, with ‘Beef’ creator Lee Sung Jin and ‘The Bear’ showrunner Joanna Calo working on the script. The pair have cited the work of legendary ‘Uncanny X-Men’ writer Chris Claremont as a major influence on the reboot’s direction. That pedigree, paired with a cast this stacked, has fans expecting something far removed from the Fox era of mutant storytelling.
