‘Train to Busan’ Director’s New Zombie Thriller ‘Colony’ Just Earned a Rotten Tomatoes Badge of Honor

Korean horror has spent the past decade building an international reputation few other national film industries can match, and much of that momentum traces directly back to one filmmaker. Yeon Sang-ho reshaped the modern zombie genre with 2016’s ‘Train to Busan,’ and virtually everything he’s touched since, including Netflix’s ‘Hellbound,’ has carried that same knack for bold, unsettling world-building.

That track record made ‘Colony’ one of the more closely watched Korean genre releases of the year well before its actual premiere. The film swaps the speed and claustrophobic chaos of a moving train for something colder and more calculated, trapping professor Kwon Se-jeong, played by Jun Ji-hyun, inside a sealed biotech facility after a rapidly mutating virus breaks out during a conference presentation.

That anticipation has now translated into solid critical numbers. ‘Colony’ has officially earned Certified Fresh status on Rotten Tomatoes, currently sitting at 71 percent based on early reviews, according to Rotten Tomatoes’ own listing for the film. That places the movie comfortably above the “Fresh” threshold, though well below the 95 percent score Yeon’s genre-defining ‘Train to Busan’ achieved a decade earlier.

That comparison matters given how directly ‘Colony’ invites it. Yeon’s filmography already includes a wide range of critical outcomes within the zombie and horror space, from ‘Seoul Station’s’ 100 percent score to ‘Train to Busan Presents: Peninsula’s’ more divisive 55 percent, a sequel criticized at the time for shifting toward heavier action, weaker character work, and less effective zombie tension.

Landing at 71 percent places ‘Colony’ solidly within the stronger half of Yeon’s genre output, ranking among his top five rated films according to ScreenRant’s own breakdown of the score. Reviewers have generally praised the film’s inventive creature design and relentless pacing, even as some critics found its back half less consistent than its opening stretch.

‘Colony’ distinguishes itself from typical zombie fare through its central conceit: the infected in the film function less like scattered individual threats and more like an interconnected hive, communicating and adapting as a unified collective. According to a review from Flickering Myth, that structure lets the infected stack themselves on top of one another, wield weapons, and behave with an unsettling, feral intelligence rather than mindless aggression, giving Yeon’s signature high-octane action sequences an extra layer of dread.

The film also stars Koo Kyo-hwan, Ji Chang-wook, Kim Shin-rok, Shin Hyun-been, and Go Soo, rounding out an ensemble built to match the scale of its claustrophobic setting inside a massive shopping mall and conference facility. Much of that setting reportedly involved real, large-scale destruction of constructed sets, giving the film’s action sequences a tangible, grounded intensity.

Following its Cannes premiere in the Midnight Screenings section back in May and a South Korean theatrical run that grossed nearly $25 million against a roughly $12 million budget, ‘Colony’ is set for a limited U.S. theatrical release on August 28 through Well Go USA Entertainment. With its Certified Fresh status now locked in ahead of that release, the film enters American theaters with a genuine critical stamp of approval, even if it stops short of matching the heights of Yeon’s most celebrated work.

For fans hoping Yeon might eventually return to a more direct ‘Train to Busan’ follow-up, ‘Colony’ offers a different kind of answer in the meantime, proving the director still has plenty of fresh ideas left in the zombie genre he helped redefine.
