‘Big Little Lies’ Fans Finally Have Season 3 Spoilers, and Liane Moriarty’s New Book Delivers a Shocking Setup

Few HBO dramas have left fans waiting quite as patiently as this one, with years passing between confirmation of a third season and any real details about what direction the story might take next. The Monterey Five’s saga has always relied on Liane Moriarty’s source material to guide the show, and that dynamic hasn’t changed heading into this next chapter.

With Season 3 still without an official release date, fans have had to settle for scraps of information here and there, making Moriarty’s latest literary contribution to the franchise feel like a genuine event.

‘Big Little Truths,’ the sequel novel set 10 years after ‘Big Little Lies’ that will lay the groundwork for the show’s third season, has finally revealed exactly what’s in store for Madeline, Jane, Celeste, Renata, and Bonnie. The book picks up with the five women, played on HBO by Reese Witherspoon, Shailene Woodley, Nicole Kidman, Laura Dern, and Zoë Kravitz respectively, as they navigate a whirlwind of life changes following the decade-long time jump.

According to Variety’s breakdown of the novel, Moriarty structures the story by cutting back and forth between the mothers’ perspectives and the months leading up to a pivotal event referred to as “D-Day,” eventually revealed to be the day Jane’s now-teenage son Ziggy and his classmates deliver a presentation exposing the disturbing truth about their new history teacher, a red-haired woman named Melody.

That presentation ends up serving as a devastating wake-up call for the mothers, who discover Melody has been preying on young students by setting up her brightest kids with job prospects that place them directly in the path of her husband, Seth Montclair, described as a predator. Disturbingly, the book reveals she’s reportedly been running this same scheme for years across multiple different schools before arriving in their community.

Moriarty previously explained the book’s structural approach to USA Today, noting that while the first novel used the parents as a kind of Greek chorus narrating the unfolding events, this sequel flips that dynamic entirely by having the now-teenage kids serve as the ones being interviewed about what happened. She revealed the story kicks off with the reveal that everything traces back to Madeline’s 50th birthday celebration.

The novel arrives after HBO CEO Casey Bloys first teased the existence of this source material back in November 2024, with Deadline later confirming that ‘Mr. and Mrs. Smith’ co-creator Francesca Sloane had been brought on to write the season’s first episode. Both Kidman and Witherspoon have publicly confirmed a third season is happening, even though HBO has yet to announce an official release date or begin production.

Interestingly, the show’s version of events has always diverged somewhat from Moriarty’s source material, with the HBO adaptation relocating the story from its original fictional Australian setting to Monterey, California, while also adding entirely new subplots not present in the books. Given how faithfully the series adapted the emotional core of the first novel despite those changes, fans have reason to expect a similarly thoughtful translation of this unsettling new storyline once cameras eventually start rolling.
