The Real-Life Owner of ‘Heated Rivalry’s’ Famous Cabin Reveals He Had to “Soul Search” Before Letting the Show Return

Location scouting rarely makes headlines on its own, but every so often a single filming spot becomes such a cultural touchstone that fans start caring almost as much about the real property as they do about the story shot there. When that happens, the actual homeowner suddenly finds themselves thrust into an unexpected corner of the spotlight.

That’s precisely the situation facing one Toronto doctor, whose quiet lakefront retreat became an unlikely internet sensation after a single memorable television episode.

The owner of the now-famous “Heated Rivalry” cabin said he needed to do some “soul searching” before allowing the show to come back for Season 2. Speaking with HGTV, Michael Kutryk explained, “I know they need it, and I realize I [could] be difficult and try to squeeze them, but I [couldn’t] bring myself to do that,” a quote reported by Variety.

Kutryk’s Muskoka home served as the backdrop for the Season 1 finale, titled “The Cottage,” in which Shane Hollander, played by Hudson Williams, brings Ilya Rozanov, played by Connor Storrie, to his remote family cabin for a private getaway. Based on Rachel Reid’s “Game Changers” book series, “Heated Rivalry” follows the two hockey stars through a years-long secret romance that unfolds alongside their competing careers on the ice.

Kutryk’s hesitation about returning appears rooted more in personal boundaries than any real desire to cash in on the property’s newfound fame. According to Just Jared, he recalled being genuinely surprised by how much of his actual home ended up shown on screen during the Season 1 finale, a detail that clearly factored into his reluctance about opening his doors again for a second round of filming.

That reluctance didn’t stop him from ultimately agreeing to a fair deal once production reached back out. Kutryk described the negotiation with a mix of humor and honesty, saying, “When they called, they said, ‘How much do you want?’ First, I told them they scratched my table, then I named a very reasonable price. They were shocked and appreciative. I actually didn’t even get them to replace my table.”

According to ScreenRant, filming for “Heated Rivalry” Season 2 began August 10 and is expected to continue through early December, with production also taking place around Toronto, Montreal, and Ottawa in addition to the Muskoka cabin location. Just Jared noted that Kutryk had originally agreed to let the show film at his property for “almost nothing” back when the production had what he described as a “very small budget,” a detail that adds extra weight to just how far the show has come since its modest beginnings.

Given how central that cottage location became to Season 1’s most talked-about episode, and how genuinely conflicted Kutryk seems about welcoming the crew back, this behind-the-scenes glimpse offers a rare, humanizing look at how much thought goes into the real-world spaces that end up defining a show’s most iconic moments.
