Zach Cregger Names the One ‘Resident Evil’ Enemy That Genuinely Broke Him, and It’s Not a Classic Villain
Horror creators tend to have distinct reactions to the media that shaped them, and few things reveal that more clearly than watching a genuinely accomplished genre filmmaker admit something actually scared him. Zach Cregger has spent the past several months doing press for his upcoming ‘Resident Evil’ reboot, and along the way, he’s opened up repeatedly about which parts of the franchise genuinely rattled him as a fan.
Given how many iconic monsters populate the ‘Resident Evil‘ catalog, from lumbering zombies to grotesque bioweapon mutations, fans might have expected Cregger to point toward one of the franchise’s more classic, well-known threats. Instead, his answer landed somewhere far more unexpected.
Zach Cregger says he thinks the giant baby from ‘Resident Evil: Village’ is the scariest infected in the franchise. “I played it in VR!” he explained, according to DiscussingFilm, quickly adding context that experiencing the moment in virtual reality likely intensified the horror significantly.
Cregger’s comments trace back to a specific sequence within ‘Village,’ where players enter a dollhouse, descend into the basement, and assemble a large doll on a table before being hunted by the towering infant creature that emerges. In an earlier interview with PlayStation Blog, Cregger described what made the moment so unbearable, saying, “There was something about the sounds that baby made, and the lights cut out, and you’re running through these halls, and you have to hide under a bed.”
That combination of sound design and disorientation proved genuinely too much for him in the moment. “It was the only time playing a video game I’ve ever actually just noped out and taken a break,” Cregger said. “I was like, ‘This is too intense.’ I took the headset off, had a cup of coffee, then went back in and finished it later. But I mean, that really got me. It’s so scary. It’s honestly f**king terrifying.”
Cregger has since revisited the topic multiple times across different interviews, reinforcing just how deeply that specific ‘Village’ sequence stuck with him. Speaking with ComicBook at San Diego Comic-Con, he reflected on the franchise’s evolution into first-person gameplay starting with ‘Resident Evil 7,’ noting that VR takes an already intense experience and “ramps it up to 11.” He added of ‘Village’ specifically, “I think it’s the best one, and there’s a sequence in 8, I played in VR, and I was just like I can’t handle it. I had to stop. It’s so intense.”
Cregger’s deep familiarity with the franchise extends well beyond just this one terrifying encounter. He’s previously described playing thousands of hours of ‘Resident Evil’ games and has reportedly already beaten ‘Resident Evil Requiem’ twice, according to comments relayed by Deadline’s Destiny Jackson.
That level of genuine fandom has shaped much of how Cregger has approached his upcoming reboot, which stars Austin Abrams, Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, and Paul Walter Hauser. Rather than adapting a specific mainline game, Cregger has built an original story woven together from gameplay elements and Easter eggs pulled from across the series, including nods to both ‘Resident Evil 4’ and ‘Resident Evil 7.’
With ‘Resident Evil’ set to hit theaters on September 18, Cregger’s candid admission about the giant baby offers fans one more small glimpse into just how much his own experiences as a player have shaped the tone and details of his upcoming film.
