Chris Evans Just Took Iron Man’s Side in the Biggest Captain America Debate

Chris Evans may always be Captain America to Marvel fans, but when it comes to one of the MCU’s biggest arguments, the actor has never been completely on Steve Rogers’ side.

That debate goes all the way back to 2016’s ‘Captain America: Civil War,’ when the Avengers were torn apart over the Sokovia Accords. Steve Rogers believed the team needed to make its own choices, while Tony Stark thought powerful heroes should have some form of government control. The disagreement turned into a full fight between the two sides, and fans have been arguing about it ever since.

Now, Evans has once again made it clear where he personally stands. In a recent video interview, the actor admitted that he understands Iron Man’s position better than Captain America’s. “I know that’s probably controversial to say,” Evans said, clearly aware that some Cap fans may not love hearing that.

It might sound strange coming from the man who played Steve Rogers for so many years, but this isn’t really a new opinion for Evans. He actually shared a similar view when ‘Civil War’ was first released. During a London press conference, Evans was asked which side he would choose if the Avengers were real. His answer was pretty direct.

“I would, I mean who wouldn’t?” Evans said when explaining why he would side with Iron Man and support government accountability.

That answer gives fans an interesting way to look at the conflict. Steve Rogers may have had strong reasons for rejecting government control, but Evans seems to think the real-world version of the situation would be much harder to ignore. If a group of superheroes had the power to cause massive destruction, having some kind of system to hold them responsible would make sense.

Evans has also explained in the past that ‘Civil War’ was never supposed to give viewers an obvious hero and villain. Speaking with ComicBook.com around the movie’s release, he pointed out that the story was built around a disagreement where both sides had understandable arguments. That was part of what made the movie work so well.

Steve wasn’t simply being stubborn, and Tony wasn’t just trying to control his friends. Both characters believed they were protecting people. The problem was that they wanted completely different solutions, and neither was willing to give up.

The timing of Evans’ latest comments also makes the whole thing more interesting. The actor is returning as Steve Rogers in ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ marking a major comeback for a character many fans thought they had said goodbye to after ‘Avengers: Endgame.’ With the new movie bringing together a huge group of Marvel characters, fans are already wondering what role Steve will play and where his loyalties will fall this time.

There is also an amusing side to the Evans comments because of his friendship with Robert Downey Jr. The two actors spent years playing rivals within the MCU, but their relationship away from the cameras has remained strong. Their chemistry helped make the Cap and Iron Man conflict one of Marvel’s most memorable rivalries.

So, Evans choosing Iron Man in real life isn’t exactly a betrayal of Captain America. He is simply separating his own opinion from the character he played. After all, Steve Rogers is a fictional hero with his own beliefs, while Evans can look at the same situation and reach a completely different conclusion.

Still, with ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ bringing Steve back into the MCU, fans will probably keep a close eye on his choices. If another major disagreement appears, viewers may find themselves wondering whether Evans would once again choose Tony’s side.

For now, though, the actor has made his position pretty clear. After years of playing one of Marvel’s biggest symbols of independence, Chris Evans is apparently Team Iron Man when it comes to the real-world argument behind ‘Civil War.’ And nearly a decade later, that debate is still strong enough to get Marvel fans talking.
