Nicole Kidman Says This Unexpected Co-Star Stole the Show in ‘Practical Magic 2′

Nearly three decades after ‘Practical Magic’ first introduced audiences to the Owens sisters, Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman have finally reunited as Sally and Gillian for the long-awaited sequel. With so much attention naturally centered on the two returning stars, it’s a little surprising that one of the film’s most memorable performances came from a co-star who never said a single word.

That co-star happens to be a black cat featured prominently throughout the sequel, a creature that’s quietly become one of the production’s most talked-about breakout presences. Given how notoriously difficult cats can be to direct on camera, it’s the kind of unexpected scene-stealing moment that even the film’s biggest stars couldn’t help but notice.

Kidman herself has now weighed in directly on just how impressed she was working alongside the feline performer. According to the actress, the cat handled itself with a level of professionalism rarely seen from animal co-stars, making the experience stand out even among her decades of on-camera work.

“That cat is the best cat I’ve ever worked with on camera. And cats can be a little tricky on camera. That cat did everything it was asked to do,” Kidman said, before crediting her co-star directly for the casting decision: “Sandy cast the cat.”

That casting choice, according to Bullock herself, came down to something refreshingly simple. Speaking on BBC World Service’s The Arts Hour, Bullock admitted the decision was essentially a matter of personal taste, joking that she simply found the cat more visually appealing than the alternatives being considered for the role.

Kidman’s admiration for the cat wasn’t purely about its on-set professionalism, either. The actress revealed a personal connection to black cats specifically, recalling that her own family once had one named Pinkle Purr, whose mother was a cat called Tattoo. Given that Kidman has several pet cats of her own and has previously expressed interest in adopting a hairless Sphynx, her soft spot for feline co-stars tracks with a genuine, long-standing affection for the animals.

Beyond the scene-stealing cat, Bullock and Kidman have also opened up about the emotional core driving their characters this time around. Bullock explained that the sequel digs into a much deeper version of the family curse than the original film suggested, describing it as a generational thread that mirrors patterns many families quietly pass down through their own lineage. Her character Sally, in particular, makes the difficult choice to erase her daughters’ memories of magic entirely, believing it will spare them from the same heartbreak she experienced.

That reunion has clearly meant a great deal to both actresses beyond just the work itself. Kidman has previously described working alongside Bullock again as genuinely joyful, a sentiment that seems to extend even to the smaller, more lighthearted moments on set, including apparently bonding over a scene-stealing cat neither of them expected to become such a memorable part of the production.

For a sequel built around decades of anticipation from longtime fans, it’s a fittingly charming detail that one of its most delightful surprises turned out to be an unbothered, camera-ready cat rather than anything involving spellwork or sisterly drama. Sometimes the real magic comes from the most unassuming place.
