Carol Ferris arrived in the sixth episode of ‘Lanterns’ to attend Hal Jordan’s funeral in Rushville, and she introduced herself to John Stewart by referencing her history with Hal. The scene marks her first live action appearance in the DC Universe, with Amie MacKenzie taking over a role Blake Lively played in the 2011 film ‘Green Lantern’.

Who Is Amie MacKenzie
Viewers may recognize MacKenzie from ‘Better Call Saul’ and ‘The Madison’ on Netflix, as well as ‘Mountainhead’ on HBO Max. Her path to the role has been an unusual one.
MacKenzie is an actress based in Denver who was a fixture of Colorado theater for decades before she moved into screen work. After surviving cancer, she booked her first on screen part in ‘Better Call Saul’ at age 53. That background makes a small but pointed role like this one feel earned.
Many fans expected Carol to show up much earlier. When Laura Linney was revealed as a cast member, the common assumption was that she would play Carol, but it soon became clear that Linney was not playing a human. Hal Jordan’s Old Flame at the Funeral
At the service, Carol explained how she ended up in Rushville. She said Sheriff Kane had reached out and invited her, and she described her relationship with Hal as history that Kane already knew about. She also remarked that “The only friendship that stuck was the one on his finger.”
Carol also handed John a eulogy that Hal had written for himself years earlier. Hal wrote it expecting a grand sendoff. As The Ringer argues in its recap, her presence does more than nod to comic book fans, because it deepens the sadness of a sparsely attended service.
The series does not spell out much more than that. The show keeps the details of the relationship deliberately vague, with Carol only implying a past romantic connection. Her dialogue suggests the two had a relationship at some point in the DCU that clearly did not last.
Carol Ferris Comics History
Carol Ferris first appeared in 1959 in Showcase #22 and was created by John Broome and Gil Kane. She began as something like the Lois Lane of the Green Lantern mythos, a co-worker of Hal’s who never learned his secret identity.
Hal worked as a test pilot for Ferris Aircraft before becoming Green Lantern, and Carol’s father founded the company before she took over its operations. Because of her policy against dating employees, she and Hal never truly became a couple in those stories, despite an obvious attraction. More recent comics also established that the two have been friends since childhood.
The character changed dramatically once the Star Sapphire gem entered the picture. In the comics, the alien Zamarons abducted her and gave her psychic abilities through the gem, then controlled her mind and compelled her to fight Hal. She later became the leader of the Star Sapphire Corps, whose purple rings are powered by love and who are now viewed as allies of the Green Lantern Corps.
What the Carol Ferris DCU Debut Means for the Season
The scene raises the question of whether Carol has a future in this universe. Episode six does not indicate whether she will return. Her brief appearance seems to suggest there are no real plans for her after this moment, which would leave the Star Sapphire possibility off the table for now.
The episode itself, titled ‘Bad Optics’, places her inside a story that is still unresolved. It ends with John taking the ring from Hal’s coffin and summoning a holographic backup of his former mentor. Two chapters remain, with the next arriving on September 27 and the season finale on October 4.
Carol’s scene also fills in a little of Hal’s life before the events of the series. Fan theories are already flying that Hal is not really dead, despite the body in the casket.
