‘Ted Lasso’ Season 5 Is Moving Toward Production Before Apple Has Made It Official

Apple has not yet ordered a fifth season of ‘Ted Lasso’, but the groundwork appears to be moving quickly. Season four is still airing new episodes through October 7, and a report already points to a production start for the next run not long after the finale. When the third season wrapped in 2023, it felt very much like the end of the series, which makes the speed of this turnaround worth examining.

The picture around ‘Ted Lasso’ is a mix of confirmed facts, trade reporting and cautious expectation. Here is what is known about the renewal status, the filming plans, the cast and the creative direction that could shape another season.

Renewal Status for a Fifth Season of ‘Ted Lasso’

‘Ted Lasso’ has not been renewed for another season yet. Apple has not made it official, though 9to5Mac expects a renewal announcement to arrive near the end of season four’s run.

The groundwork for a renewal looks well underway. A previous report suggested there are plans for at least two more seasons, with a writers’ room for a potential fifth season opening in late August. The Hollywood Reporter has said the creative team would be back in the writers’ room in late August to map out a season that has not been ordered, and that Jason Sudeikis again has a three season arc in mind while hoping the audience is still there.

Apple’s own leadership has also weighed in. When asked about a potential fifth season, executive Eddy Cue said “I hope so.” That is not an announcement, and Apple has not announced a new season, but it points to real interest at the top.

Filming Plans and the Expected Release Date

Apple TV commentator Sigmund Judge says he has heard from multiple sources that the provisional plan is to begin shooting the next season in London in January 2027. The show has not been greenlit, so the specific locations for any new episodes remain unknown.

Judge’s track record gives the report some weight. He has previously reported accurate breaking news on ‘Ted Lasso’ and other Apple TV series, and with a production start only a few months away, 9to5Mac considers a return in 2027 very likely.

Other outlets take a more measured view of the timeline. TV Insider says a fifth season would likely not arrive until at least 2027 or 2028, pending renewal and progress. The first season debuted in August 2020, the second followed in July 2021 and the third arrived in March 2023, and while the fourth came nearly three years later, the reset of storylines suggests fans would not face that long a wait again.

Cast Changes That Could Shape the Next Season

The main cast of season four features Jason Sudeikis as Ted, alongside Brendan Hunt as Coach Beard, Hannah Waddingham as Rebecca Welton, Juno Temple as Keeley Jones and Brett Goldstein as Roy Kent. That core group would presumably anchor any continuation, although none of the coverage reviewed here confirms who would return.

The ensemble has also changed. Several original cast members did not reprise their roles in season four, including Phil Dunster, James Lance, Cristo Fernández and Anthony Head, who died just two months before the season premiere.

Fresh faces have entered the picture as well. Tanya Reynolds joins as Alice Chilton, a coach who expected to take charge before Rebecca Welton brought Ted in. That setup creates a built in tension that a fifth season could build on.

Creative Direction and Audience Response After Season Four

Season four picks up three years after Ted returned to Kansas to be closer to his son. Sudeikis has explained that returning to the show was not an automatic decision. He has described his motive for continuing Ted’s story in London as simply that he needed it.

The new chapter was built on fresh research. Sudeikis said preparation included conversations with people working in women’s football, including coaches, sports psychologists and England international Leah Williamson. The season also asks Ted and Beard to work with a team whose players are not necessarily prepared to accept instructions without question, which makes it less a straightforward continuation than an attempt to find another story in this world.

Audiences appear to have responded. Apple revealed that the fourth season was its biggest launch to date, with 296.6 million watched minutes in just two days, and the season received comfortably better reviews than the third. If Apple does confirm a fifth season, would you rather see Sudeikis finish the three season arc he has in mind, or would you want ‘Ted Lasso’ to keep finding new stories in London?
