‘Smallville’ Star Tom Welling (49) Deletes Instagram Story After an Awkward Hotel Window Reflection Goes Viral
Tom Welling has been one of the busiest names at New York Comic Con this year. The 49-year-old actor, best known for playing Clark Kent across 10 seasons of ‘Smallville’, traveled to the Big Apple for a major cast reunion celebrating the beloved superhero series.
The timing is significant for fans. ‘Smallville’ hits its 25th anniversary on October 16, and the convention gave Welling and his former co-stars the perfect stage to celebrate the milestone together.
Before the reunion even began, however, Welling found himself at the center of an unexpected social media moment. On Friday, October 9, he shared a photo to his Instagram Stories from his New York City hotel room, apparently hoping to show off the view of skyscrapers, streets, and blue sky.
The post came with a simple convention greeting to NYCC. But fans who looked a little closer quickly noticed that the hotel window had captured Welling’s reflection, and the image appeared to show that he wasn’t wearing any clothes.
According to Just Jared, the story remained live on his public profile for at least 10 hours before it was removed. By then, screenshots had already spread across social media. By the morning of October 10, Welling’s name was trending on X and Google Trends.
Many users expressed disbelief that the actor hadn’t spotted the reflection before sharing the image with his 2.2 million followers, with some joking that he urgently needed a PR team.

Not everyone was convinced the photo was as revealing as claimed. A number of fans admitted they couldn’t make out any clear details, joking that others were simply seeing shapes in the clouds.
Others took a more thoughtful approach to the viral moment. Some cautioned fellow fans against reposting the image without consent, pointing out that it was clearly an innocent mistake.
Welling has not publicly addressed the incident. Requests for comment sent to the actor and his representatives had not received a response at the time of reporting. Instead, he carried on with his convention schedule. On Saturday, October 10, he shared a new Instagram Story showing himself signing merchandise for fans inside the Javits Center, inviting attendees to stop by and say hello.
The lighthearted update suggested the actor was focused on connecting with fans rather than dwelling on the deleted post. For many attendees, it was a chance to meet the man who brought a young Superman to life.

The main event came later that day with ‘The Road to Superman: 25 Years of Smallville’ panel at the Javits Center. Welling was joined on stage by former co-stars Michael Rosenbaum, Kristin Kreuk, Erica Durance and Julie Snyder.
Rosenbaum, 54, shared a selfie from the stage with his former castmates on Instagram, celebrating the reunion with fans. The panel offered a nostalgic look back at the series that followed Clark Kent’s journey toward becoming the Man of Steel.
For longtime viewers, seeing the cast together again was the real highlight of the weekend. The show’s legacy continues to draw passionate crowds a quarter-century after it first aired.
While the accidental reflection briefly overshadowed the celebration, it hasn’t seemed to dampen enthusiasm for the reunion. If anything, the story added an unexpected layer of buzz to Welling’s Comic Con appearance.
With the official anniversary just days away, fans will likely shift their attention back to ‘Smallville’ itself. For Welling, the weekend serves as a reminder to double-check every photo before hitting share.
