Monica Barbaro has quickly become one of Hollywood’s most in-demand actresses. The Oscar nominee is now part of one of the most talked-about films of the fall, Luca Guadagnino’s ‘Artificial’, a comedic drama about the dramatic days in 2023 when OpenAI removed and then reinstated its chief executive, Sam Altman.

The film has already had an eventful journey. Amazon MGM Studios dropped the project after striking a massive partnership with OpenAI that included a $50 billion investment, before Neon stepped in to rescue it and set a Christmas Day theatrical release.

After its world premiere at the New York Film Festival on October 5, ‘Artificial’ crossed the Atlantic for its UK premiere. On Sunday, October 11, the film received a Gala screening at the Royal Festival Hall during the 70th BFI London Film Festival, and Barbaro was one of the night’s standout arrivals.

She wore a glitzy pale blue sequined slip dress with thin straps and a fitted silhouette. The midi-length design finished with a delicate ruffled hem that added movement as she walked the red carpet.

Barbaro paired the shimmering gown with silver strappy heels. She kept her styling soft and polished, wearing her dark brown hair in loose, voluminous waves. The actress was joined by a star-studded group from the film. Andrew Garfield, director Luca Guadagnino, Yura Borisov, Ike Barinholtz and Mark Rylance all attended the gala.

Producers David Heyman and Jennifer Fox were also on hand, along with screenwriter Simon Rich. Garfield, who was reported to be attending alongside Barbaro, wore a brown open-collared shirt with a matching jacket and round spectacles.

In ‘Artificial’, Barbaro portrays Mira Murati, OpenAI’s chief technology officer. Garfield stars as Altman, while Borisov plays OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever, who led the effort to remove him.

The ensemble also includes Cooper Hoffman, Jason Schwartzman and Chris O’Dowd, with Barinholtz reportedly playing Elon Musk. Damon Albarn provides original songs and the score for the 140-minute film.

The film has generated plenty of buzz since its festival debut. Deadline’s review described Garfield’s turn as chilling and said the OpenAI origin story should make audiences very afraid.

Variety’s Antonio Ferme felt the film plays like a proper sequel to ‘The Social Network’, praising how Garfield captures Altman’s charismatic yet manipulative demeanor. Supporters of the film have also highlighted the strength of its supporting cast, Barbaro included.

‘Artificial’ is the latest project from the director behind ‘Challengers’, ‘Bones and All’ and ‘Suspiria’. It follows his drama ‘After the Hunt’, which starred Julia Roberts, Garfield and Ayo Edebiri.

Guadagnino took on ‘Artificial’ after a scheduling change left an opening in his calendar. The project came together quickly, with Rich serving as both writer and producer. ‘Artificial’ arrives in theaters on Christmas Day through Neon. With strong early buzz and a timely subject, it is shaping up to be a major awards-season conversation piece.

For Barbaro, the London premiere offered the perfect spotlight ahead of the film’s release. Her shimmering blue look proved she can shine just as brightly on the red carpet as she does on screen.
