Skydance and Movistar Plus Team Up to Launch Co-Branded Original Series
Spain’s television landscape is getting a major boost from one of Hollywood’s newest giants. Skydance, which recently completed its mega-merger with Warner Bros., has been reshaping its international partnerships, and one of its first big pacts is with Movistar Plus, Spain’s largest pay TV and SVOD operator.
Movistar Plus has long been known for ambitious original programming. The platform has built a strong reputation for Spanish-language series, but expanding the global reach of its shows has been one of its biggest challenges in recent years.
Now, the two companies have announced an expanded strategic alliance through a new 2-year global agreement. The deal goes beyond distribution, moving into co-development and co-production of original series.
Under the agreement, the partners will create series under a joint label, Movistar Plus and HBO Original. These shows will be distributed worldwide by HBO Max and Skydance. The series are set to premiere simultaneously on Movistar Plus and HBO Max in Spain, as well as in key territories where HBO Max is available. That global rollout could give Spanish talent a much larger international audience.
The first project under the new label is ‘Veredicto’, produced in collaboration with Ikiru Films and Luminol Media. The series was created by Eduard Sola, Pol Cortecans and Daniel González from an original idea by Carles Porta, often described as Spain’s true-crime master.
The cast includes Nagore Aranburu, Ernesto Alterio, Alba Flores, Omar Ayuso, Secun de la Rosa and Alfredo Castro. The ensemble brings together some of Spain’s most recognizable acting talent.
A second co-branded series is also in the works from Porta and Los Moriarti, the team behind ‘Maspalomas’, ‘Marco’ and ‘The Endless Trench’. That project will star Anna Castillo, Pol López and Eduard Fernández.
The renewed agreement also keeps HBO Max integrated within the Movistar Plus platform. Subscribers will continue accessing HBO Max’s catalogue directly through the Movistar Plus experience.
Beyond streaming, the pact covers a selection of Skydance TV channels, major Warner Bros. theatrical releases and new content agreements. It also includes initiatives tied to sports rights.
Promotional artwork for the deal highlights some of the franchises Spanish viewers can expect. It features titles including ‘Supergirl’, ‘Lanterns’, ‘FBI’ and ‘House of the Dragon’. For Movistar Plus, the alliance offers a solution to the challenge of scaling international distribution. It also provides valuable co-financing, which could help its top creators make the series they envision with the resources they need.
For Skydance, the partnership opens a stronger path into Spanish-language markets. These markets have become increasingly competitive among global streaming platforms.
Skydance’s Alessandro Araimo, managing director and executive vice president for Southern Europe, said the expanded alliance would allow the company to keep bringing Spanish audiences some of the industry’s most influential franchises. Movistar Plus CEO Alfonso Gómez Palacio described the deal as a strengthening of the long-term partnership.
The companies have said the initiative will expand the reach of stories developed in Spain and increase the visibility of Spanish creative talent. It also reinforces Movistar Plus’ commitment to high-quality original content.
With ‘Veredicto’ and a second series already announced, the partnership is off to an ambitious start. Fans of Spanish television could soon see more homegrown hits reaching viewers around the world.
