‘Mass Effect: Universe’ Trailer Leak Leaves Fans Heartbroken After BioWare Shutdown

It has been a brutal week for anyone who grew up with the ‘Mass Effect’ franchise. On Wednesday, October 21, Electronic Arts confirmed it was shutting down BioWare, the studio behind ‘Mass Effect’ and ‘Dragon Age’, and ending work on the next ‘Mass Effect’ game. In its statement, BioWare said the studio was closing and that early development on the upcoming project was coming to an end.

The news stings even more given how long fans have waited. The next ‘Mass Effect’ was first teased at The Game Awards in 2020, and as recently as November 2025, BioWare reassured players that it was still in development.

Earlier downsizing had left a core team led by original trilogy veterans like Mike Gamble, Preston Watamaniuk, Derek Watts, and Parrish Ley focused on the sequel, following ‘Dragon Age: The Veilguard’ reaching roughly 1.5 million players in its first 2 months, which EA said was nearly half of its expectations.

Then, within hours of the shutdown, something unexpected surfaced. A trailer for what appears to be ‘Mass Effect 5’, seemingly titled ‘Mass Effect: Universe’, was posted to the ‘Mass Effect’ subreddit by a brand-new account describing itself as a burner. It appeared as a reply to a thread about a supposed EA employee claiming the team had a trailer ready to go for months.

The footage opens with a note explaining that it’s in-engine footage from a small team, built using pre-production assets. The clip, just over 2 minutes long, features a new protagonist, with original trilogy favorite Liara T’Soni appearing as an ally, a hint of romance, and a final title card followed by the words “Coming Soon.”

Other scenes show a team of apparent spies capturing a target and a fight breaking out inside a bar. The same Reddit user claimed the ‘Mass Effect’ group consisted of roughly 50 developers, adding that EA’s Austin office will stay open, just without the BioWare name attached.

At first, nobody could say for sure. But Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier soon said on Bluesky that the trailer is genuine and that BioWare had been working on the game right up until its closure. Content creator Kala Elizabeth also said during a livestream that her own sources confirmed the footage is legitimate.

That raises uncomfortable questions about EA’s framing. The publisher described the project as being in early development, but IGN reports that an anonymous BioWare employee was surprised by that characterization.

A trailer this polished suggests more finished work than “early” implies, though polished trailers can sometimes be produced well before a game is actually playable. The timing also points to what might have been. BioWare traditionally celebrated the series every year on N7 Day, November 7, and the trailer may well have premiered there had EA not shut the studio down.

Across social media, the reaction has been a mix of awe and grief. PC Gamer admitted the leak made the news feel even worse, calling the footage just the right blend of sexy, violent, and corny, and describing it as a ‘Mass Effect’ they would absolutely play. On Reddit, one fan summed up the mood by describing feeling deeply sad and angry.

Some are even holding onto a sliver of optimism. The fan account We Are Mass Effect speculated that this could be a “Deadpool-style” leak, deliberately designed to build public pressure and potentially give the cancelled project a second chance.

Whether EA would ever reconsider remains to be seen, but the outpouring of support is hard to ignore. For now, ‘Mass Effect: Universe’ stands as a bittersweet glimpse of a game that will most likely never be finished, and a reminder of the talent that went into it.

Do you think EA could revive Mass Effect: Universe after the leaked trailer sparked a wave of fan support?
