‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Officially Puts Sam Wilson in Charge as New Character Descriptions Tease a Multiversal Showdown
The countdown to ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ has officially entered its final stretch, and Marvel’s promotional machine is starting to reveal how its biggest pieces fit together. Disney pushed the film back 7 months from its original release date of May 1, 2026, and it will now hit theaters on December 18, 2026. Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, it will run for 165 minutes, with the sequel ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ scheduled for December 17, 2027.
The scale of the project has never been in doubt. The official synopsis confirms that 3 separate universes will collide in the film, and previous trailers and casting announcements revealed heroes from the MCU, the Fox X-Men universe, and the Fantastic Four’s Earth-828. Robert Downey Jr. stars as Victor von Doom, alongside Chris Evans returning as Steve Rogers.
Now, the first descriptions for Captain America and the Falcon have surfaced, shared by fan account Cosmic Marvel, and they put Anthony Mackie’s hero squarely at the center of the story. Sam Wilson’s blurb says he “has assembled the Avengers and leads this diverse group of heroes as they face the collision between three different universes.”
Danny Ramirez’s Joaquin Torres gets an equally confident write-up, described as being back in action and ready to take off alongside Captain America’s Avengers. Taken together, the descriptions confirm what many fans have suspected for months: this is Sam’s team, and he’s the one holding it together when the multiverse starts falling apart.
That framing feels like a natural payoff. ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ ended with Sam deciding to rebuild the Avengers, and the conclusion of ‘Thunderbolts*’ rebranded that unlikely superteam as the New Avengers, with its post-credits scene teasing friction with Sam’s version. The new descriptions suggest Sam’s roster is the one Marvel is positioning as the heart of the film.

When audiences last saw him in ‘Captain America: Brave New World’, he was still recovering from injuries sustained during a battle orchestrated by the villainous Leader. An Air Force lieutenant and Sam Wilson’s closest ally, Joaquin now appears ready to fly right back into the fight.
His place on the team was already strongly hinted at. A Disney event in Italy showcased the cast, presenting Sam Wilson, Thor, Loki, Shang-Chi, Falcon and Ant-Man together in one group as ‘the Heroic Avengers’. Back in June, The Cosmic Circus’s Alex Perez also reported that Sam’s Avengers start the film as just 2 people, Sam and Joaquin, before recruiting during the story.

If that report holds, the new descriptions read like a neat summary of the film’s arc. Sam begins with his trusted wingman and builds outward, gathering a coalition big enough to handle a threat no single universe could survive.
The shift is a significant one for the franchise. Earlier promotional material described Sam as the active leader on the ground, helping the newly formed Earth’s Mightiest Heroes navigate the conflict while exploring the heavy burden of command in a world-ending scenario. Torres, meanwhile, represents the next generation of heroes stepping up under Sam’s leadership, providing agile air support in the fight against Doctor Doom.
The Russo brothers have made it clear the stakes are as high as they get. They describe the collapse of the multiverse as the most profound event in the MCU, and Anthony Russo explained that combining the X-Men, Avengers, and Fantastic Four universes is at the heart of the collision.
