‘Paris Has Fallen’ Season 3: ‘Shadow Has Fallen’ Takes the Franchise to Southern Africa

The next chapter of ‘Paris Has Fallen’ now has a title, a cast and cameras rolling. StudioCanal confirmed on September 1 that the series continues as ‘Shadow Has Fallen’, a season of six episodes in production across the UK and South Africa. It follows ‘Paris Has Fallen’ and ‘Apollo Has Fallen’, and a premiere date has not been announced.

For viewers who have followed ‘Paris Has Fallen’ since its debut, the update brings a change of setting and a new central threat. The Has Fallen franchise began with ‘Olympus Has Fallen’ in 2013 before expanding to television. The details released so far suggest the spin off is widening its scope rather than repeating itself.

The ‘Paris Has Fallen’ Cast Welcomes New Faces

Ritu Arya and Tewfik Jallab return as MI6 operative Zara Taylor and former French Secret Service agent Vincent Taleb. Keeping the two leads in place preserves the central partnership that defined the earlier episodes.

The newcomers include several recognizable names. Iwan Rheon, known for ‘Game of Thrones’ and ‘Misfits,’ Brendan Coyle, known for ‘Downton Abbey’ and ‘Hit Point,’ and Atandwa Kani, known for ‘Black Panther,’ are all joining the season. Rheon plays Miles, a British prisoner whose extraction starts the central crisis. Full character details for the other new arrivals have not been revealed.

Gerard Butler serves as an executive producer through G-BASE, though he is not listed among the cast. Additional South African cast names are expected to be announced as production continues. That leaves the story firmly in the hands of Zara and Vincent, with a fresh ensemble forming around them.

What the Plot Sets Up in Mozambique

The official logline begins with a prison bus ambushed in Mozambique, after which Vincent and Zara extract Miles. That sets off a chain reaction that threatens global infrastructure, world leaders and the idea of government itself. The stakes are framed as political and systemic rather than personal.

Miles is described as a whistleblower who holds an untraceable cyber weapon able to hijack any computerized system, from banks to military drones. He helped the British government develop it, but he has now stolen it. The logline leaves open why he took it and whose side he is on.

That uncertainty echoes the opening of the series. ‘Paris Has Fallen’ followed a protection officer and an MI6 operative who team up after a terrorist attack and suspect a mole. Once again, the heroes will have to decide whom to trust before they can stop the larger threat.

Series creator Howard Overman wrote all six episodes, with Marco Kreuzpaintner and Alice Troughton attached to direct. Overman described the assignment for Vincent and Zara as a “morally challenging mission.”

Filming Locations in South Africa and the UK

Filming is taking place across South Africa and the United Kingdom, which marks a new geographic direction for the series. Overman set this chapter in Southern Africa. The move away from Paris reflects the wider reach of the story.

The location carries business significance as well. Following the Canal+ Group’s acquisition of MultiChoice Group, ‘Shadow Has Fallen’ is the second large scale production the studio has brought to the region, after Bill Condon’s feature film ‘The Road Home.’ StudioCanal said the series will draw on South Africa’s cast, crews and creative talent.

The series is produced by Urban Myth, which StudioCanal owns, for Canal+, in partnership with StudioCanal, Millennium and G-Base. StudioCanal will handle international distribution. The same structure has carried the earlier seasons to a wide audience.

Release Date and Franchise Outlook

No official release date has been set while the season remains deep in production. One French outlet expects a Canal+ arrival toward the end of next year. That estimate should be treated as speculation until the network or studio confirms a window.

The earlier seasons offer a useful guide to the likely rollout. ‘Paris Has Fallen’ premiered on Canal+ on September 23, 2024, with eight episodes. It reached the United States on Hulu on December 6. The series has sold to more than 170 territories, and ‘Apollo Has Fallen’ was set to premiere on Canal+ in France on September 14.

Critics have credited ‘Paris Has Fallen’ with balancing character driven drama against intense action. The franchise has so far moved at roughly one season per year. With a stolen cyber weapon at the center and a new continent as the backdrop, do you expect Zara and Vincent to trust Miles once his motives come out, and is Southern Africa the right next stop for ‘Paris Has Fallen’?
