‘Tracker’ Season 4 Episode 4 Recap & Ending Explained: How Colter Shaw Cracked the ‘Purification’ Case

Colter’s latest case takes him to Utah, where a woman goes missing after getting her heart broken. This ‘Tracker’ recap covers an hour that begins as a fairly routine search and gradually reveals a far darker situation hiding in plain sight. The episode is titled “Purification.”

The story moves from a lovesick disappearance to the rescue of a frightened teenager, and the ending explained below turns on how much the victims did for themselves. Here is how the case unfolds, what the final confrontation settles, and what small threads the hour leaves behind for the weeks ahead.

Tracker Episode Recap and a Missing Woman in Utah

The missing woman is Nicole, and her father is offering $8,000 for her return but gives Randy no details. He insists on speaking only with Colter about her disappearance. Once Colter arrives, Roy walks him through Nicole’s apartment. Roy confesses that he is scared, since Nicole is his only child.

The apartment offers the first real lead. Colter finds a cupcake box and a note in the trash, which suggests she was seeing someone and had gone out to meet him before she vanished. Randy then traces the cupcake sender to a man named Steven Jones.

That trail leads to an uncomfortable conversation. Colter learns that Stephen is married with a son, and after Colter threatens to speak with his wife, Stephen admits that he and Nicole were together. Colter has him show the way to the public park where they spoke, and Colter finds a bracelet there that Stephen confirms he gave Nicole.

The affair looks like a motive at first, but the show quickly steers away from it. Colter worries initially that Stephen hurt Nicole to cover up the affair, and he turns out to be wrong about that. The cheating husband becomes a witness rather than a suspect, though his role is more useful than it first appears.

The Trail to Tate Montgomery’s House

The case widens once a wrecked car enters the picture. Colter pulls up at a gas station and finds a towing company hauling a wrecked car with stripped plates. He locates Nicole’s car after it was involved in an incident there.

Inside that car is the clue that changes the nature of the search. Colter discovers a teenager’s hoodie bearing a tiger club logo in the back of the vehicle. A quick stop at the club reveals that a man named Tate Montgomery owns a camper van with a similar logo.

The club’s records add a troubling layer. Colter learns that the driver had shown creepy behavior toward teenagers at the center, which led officials to revoke his membership. Thankfully, they had an address on file, and that gave Colter his biggest lead yet.

Tate Montgomery’s home is where the episode earns its grim reputation. Colter finds evidence that a young boy had been held captive, along with the skeletal remains of the real Mr. Montgomery. He also finds a camcorder, and the footage shows a man torturing a kid in the basement.

Ending Explained and the Rescue of Nicole and Jason

The final act brings the missing woman and the teenager together. Nicole had not known the kid long before she tried to help him, and Colter did his best to help them both. The boy turns out to be named Jason, and he has been on the run from the people who held him.

The confrontation itself is built around the victims. The plan lets Nicole ambush Elias as he is punishing Jason, just as Colter arrives to lend a hand. Colter then kicks Elias in the chest as he lunges with a knife.

One detail from the crash deserves a careful reading. Cheryl is knocked unconscious in the crash, and the episode does not establish that Nicole kills her. Colter also stops Elias without killing him.

The aftermath is quieter than the chase. Jason tells Roy that Nicole saved him, and Nicole says Colter saved them both, after which Roy hands over the reward. Colter then gets a call from Reenie, who reveals that the boy’s parents have been arrested.

Critics noticed how the rescue was shaped. In its review, TV Fanatic argued that Colter’s rescue almost felt secondary, because Nicole and Jason had already saved each other in so many ways. The same review also called one key lead too convenient, since Colter would have had nothing to follow without a chance sighting of the car.

Colter and Jenna, Reenie’s Office and the Road Ahead

Away from the case, the hour tends to a few lighter threads. Colter is back at his camper when Jenna Nova, played by Gillian Bolt, delivers the backseat he bought at her repair shop. The episode develops their mutual interest but does not show a dinner or establish a committed relationship.

The team side of the story gets a small resolution too. Colter’s team finally gets a new office, since Reenie found a good place and signed the lease on the spot. The search for a workspace had been a running joke, and settling it should give the supporting cast room for bigger stories.

There is also a quieter note about the Shaw family. Colter is reminded of his past the more he works on his dad’s old car, which could be good for him or could bring up things Russell was trying to bury. Jensen Ackles is set to return as Russell Shaw in the next episode.

That return matters because of where Russell left off. Colter recently got a text from Russ, who apologized for being missing and promised they would talk soon. With a new romance forming and a brother about to resurface, would Colter be better off letting the car stay a hobby, or should he finally ask Russell what he was hiding?
