‘Godzilla Minus Zero’ Director Takashi Yamazaki Lines up Paul Giamatti, Nico Parker and Sam Nivola for ‘Grandgear’
Few filmmakers have had a rise quite like Takashi Yamazaki’s. The Japanese director and visual effects supervisor turned ‘Godzilla Minus One’ into a global phenomenon, earning around $116 million on a reported $15 million budget and becoming the first director since Stanley Kubrick to win the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects.
His next monster movie is just around the corner. ‘Godzilla Minus Zero’, the first Japanese production shot for IMAX, opens in Japan on November 3 and arrives in North American theaters on November 6 through GKIDS.
Yamazaki is also preparing to make his move into Hollywood with ‘Grandgear’, his first English-language feature and first major studio picture. Sony Pictures is behind the original sci-fi project, which has been widely described as a giant mech movie, with Bad Robot’s J.J. Abrams producing alongside Glen Zipper.
Now the film has found its leads. Sam Nivola and Nico Parker are set to star, while Paul Giamatti is in talks to join the cast, according to Deadline. As Culture Crave highlighted, the sci-fi film will reportedly feature giant mechs battling each other. Official plot details, however, remain under wraps.
Yamazaki took a careful approach to finding his stars. According to the trade, his search for the film’s 2 biggest roles included a rigorous round of chemistry tests, which ultimately led to Nivola and Parker landing the parts.

Giamatti, meanwhile, was reportedly the filmmakers’ top choice for his role. The 2-time Oscar nominee was recently seen in ‘Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’. The casting puts 2 fast-rising young actors at the center of a major studio film. Nivola was one of the quiet standouts of HBO’s ‘The White Lotus’, earning attention for his subtle performance.
Parker has been on a steady upward climb as well. She starred in the Sundance hit ‘Suncoast’, earned a BAFTA nomination for ‘The Last of Us’ and played the female lead in the live-action ‘How to Train Your Dragon’.
Yamazaki wrote the original screenplay himself and will direct. His track record of finding the human heart within stories of monsters and machines has already drawn comparisons to Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Pacific Rim’.
Production on ‘Grandgear’ is expected to begin in 2027, with Sony targeting an early 2028 theatrical release. Reports have differed on the exact date, with some listing February 18, 2028, and others January 14, 2028.
The director’s schedule is filling up quickly. In addition to ‘Grandgear’, Yamazaki is also attached to a mysterious sci-fi project titled ‘Nue’ at 20th Century Studios. How audiences respond to ‘Godzilla Minus Zero’ could give him even more momentum heading into production. With early tracking pointing to a solid opening, Yamazaki may enter his Hollywood debut with considerable creative leverage.
For fans of large-scale sci-fi spectacle, the combination of Yamazaki’s visual effects expertise, Abrams’ producing touch, and a promising young cast makes ‘Grandgear’ one of the most intriguing projects on the horizon.
