With just weeks to go until Marvel’s biggest crossover in years, ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ secrets are slipping out faster than Doom can lock them away. The Russo brothers have kept plot details tightly guarded, but the steady drumbeat of trailers, promo art and new scenes has given fans plenty to chew on.

Much of that groundwork was laid by ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’, the theatrical re-release that added new footage tying directly into the next film. One scene at the TVA shows thousands of incursions wiping out worlds within seconds, prompting Ke Huy Quan’s engineer Ouroboros to declare that the multiverse is collapsing.

Now Empire magazine has stepped in with a primer for anyone feeling lost. Pages shared online from the magazine’s latest issue show a feature built as a crash course for the film, with the headline “School up on a superhero showdown” and a promise to help readers who aren’t yet prepared for what’s coming.

Fans have been quick to point out that the guide spells out a surprising amount. Its biggest reveals center on how the film’s sprawling cast of heroes fits together, and why the multiverse itself is under threat.

According to the feature, the Fantastic Four hail from one universe and the X-Men from another. For reasons still unexplained, those worlds and the main MCU reality of Earth-616 are collapsing into one another, and it seems only one can survive.

Complicating matters even further is Doctor Doom, described as a seemingly all-powerful villain from the Fantastic Four’s universe who has arrived on Earth-616 with a sinister, unknown agenda. Empire also notes that Doom is played by Robert Downey Jr., returning to the MCU as its biggest villain after years as its biggest hero, though any link to Tony Stark remains a mystery for now.

The film also features 2 separate Avengers teams. The official squad is led by Sam Wilson’s new Captain America, while the New Avengers, formerly known as the Thunderbolts, form the second group, with reinforcements arriving from the Fantastic Four and the X-Men.

Loki looks set to play a pivotal part. The ‘Encore’ scenes suggest Steve Rogers’ happy ending with Peggy Carter may be interrupted by a visit from the god, and Anthony Russo hinted that Loki will appear in a new incarnation as the God of Time, holding the multiverse together.

Joe Russo went even further, describing the multiverse crisis as the most profound event the MCU has ever faced. That’s a bold claim for a franchise that has already survived Thanos’ snap.

The guide also revisits Bruce Banner’s chilling ‘Encore’ scene, in which Doom is heard but not seen, seemingly kidnapping the scientist. Empire suggests Doom could want the Hulk as muscle, since fighting the Avengers gets a lot easier with a Hulk on your side.

That fits with what the directors previously teased. Speaking to Empire about the bunker scene, Joe Russo said Doom’s “interest may extend beyond just Banner,” hinting at a much wider collection effort.

Whether the feature counts as a spoiler depends on how closely fans have followed the marketing. Much of it connects dots already laid out by trailers and the ‘Encore’ scenes, but seeing the stakes spelled out so plainly has clearly caught some readers off guard.

Either way, the countdown is nearly over. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ arrives in theaters on December 18, bringing the Avengers, Fantastic Four, X-Men, and more face to face with Downey’s Doom.

Do you think Empire’s Avengers: Doomsday primer revealed too much about the movie?
