Few costume pieces in superhero history carry as much weight as Cyclops’ visor. For ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, James Marsden is stepping back into the role of Scott Summers 27 years after he first played the X-Men leader, and every detail of his comeback has been scrutinized by fans.

Marsden’s last appearance as the character came in a cameo in 2014’s ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’. He has described his return as a homecoming to the role that put him on the map, and admitted it took very little convincing when Marvel came calling.

Now a newly updated shot of Cyclops from ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ has surfaced online, and it’s putting the visor under the microscope. Comparing the 2 versions side by side, the earlier frame shows the visor as a plain golden band, while the updated image appears to add a red stripe across the lens.

That change brings the look closer to the glowing effect fans have long associated with the character. The rest of the shot is unchanged, showing a battle-worn Scott Summers with a scuffed face, set against a fiery, smoky backdrop.

Cyclops made his MCU debut in the third ‘Doomsday’ teaser, released on January 6. The footage showed Marsden’s hero tearing off his visor in the ruins of the X-Mansion and unleashing a massive red optic blast. That teaser ended with a title card promising that the X-Men will return. For many fans, it was the moment that turned cautious curiosity into genuine excitement.

Marsden is finally wearing a costume that echoes the comics. At San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel displayed his official suit, featuring blue body armor, yellow accents, a utility belt with the X-Men emblem and the signature ruby-quartz visor.

Fans praised details like a textured X pattern worked into the chest armor, something earlier live-action versions didn’t include. Some did nitpick the shade of yellow on the boots, but the overall reaction was overwhelmingly positive.

As great as it looks, the visor hasn’t been easy to wear. During an appearance on ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’, Marsden said putting on the new suit made him feel cool and proud, right up until he put on the visor and realized he couldn’t see again.

He explained that he could only see through a small slit. It’s a familiar problem for the actor, who has also recalled struggling with the tight leather costumes from the original ‘X-Men’ films.

Interestingly, Cyclops’ visor may appear in more than one form. Marvel’s promotional material for Doctor Doom’s trophy room shows a Cyclops visor among other artifacts, though it doesn’t seem to match the design Marsden wears in the trailer.

Cyclops is also set to feature heavily in the film’s merchandise. A Hot Toys figure poses the hero amid a destroyed Sentinel head, hinting at a major battle against Doom’s robotic army.

Marsden is part of a large group of returning Fox-era mutants, including Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Rebecca Romijn, Kelsey Grammer, Alan Cumming and Channing Tatum. Together, they’ll cross paths with the Avengers and the Fantastic Four against Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom.

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ arrives in theaters on December 18. With small tweaks like this visor update, Marvel seems determined to give Cyclops the cinematic moment fans have been waiting decades to see.
