A Background Gag in ‘The Simpsons’ Halloween Special Sent Curious Fans to an Adult Website
‘The Simpsons’ has turned Halloween into one of television’s longest-running traditions. Its annual ‘Treehouse of Horror’ anthology has entertained viewers for decades, and this year’s edition arrived exactly 36 years after the very first one aired in 1990.
‘Treehouse of Horror XXXVII’ premiered on Fox on October 25. It opened with a stop-motion tribute to ‘The Nightmare Before Christmas’, produced by Stoopid Buddy Stoodios, the team behind ‘Robot Chicken’. Bart became Jack Skellington, Marge became Sally, and Homer became the Mayor of Halloween Town, with Santa’s Little Helper as Jack’s ghost dog, Zero.
The episode got plenty of attention, though not all of it for the reasons the writers intended. Viewers found that a website address shown in the special led to a page full of explicit adult content.
The address appeared in “Vehicular Dadslaughter,” the episode’s final segment, in which Homer gets trapped inside vintage driver’s education films while Patty and Selma pull the strings. A sign in the background advertised the DMV’s supposedly broken website, as a quick jab at bureaucratic incompetence.
After the broadcast, fans who typed in the address reported that it led to explicit material. Warnings quickly spread across Reddit, Threads, and X, with many users urging others not to visit the site, especially at work. The explicit content wasn’t part of the broadcast itself. It was hosted on an outside domain that matched the address shown in the episode.
Apparently, there’s a website hidden on a sign outside the DMV in Act 3 of The Simpsons: Treehouse of Horror that aired yesterday. Go check it out before it gets taken down… 😭 DO NOT OPEN IT AT WORK. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED 💀 https://t.co/HXJI7iKBTN

How it got there is still unclear. Some commenters speculated that an opportunist registered the domain after noticing it in the episode, but that theory hasn’t been confirmed, and it isn’t known whether the studio ever owned the address.
There has been no official response from Fox, Disney or Hulu. Rumors online that the special had been pulled over the incident have also not been verified. Aside from the website mix-up, the special followed the classic anthology format. Written by Joel H. Cohen, Jessica Conrad, and Tim Long and directed by David Silverman, it featured 3 spooky stories.
In the first, Marge gets a horrifying new perspective on marriage when a shed in her yard keeps producing new husbands. In the second, Bart and Santa’s Little Helper go on a chilling adventure after swapping bodies. The finale traps Homer in the cursed driver’s education reels, with the Bouvier sisters reimagined as witches wearing DMV traffic-cone hats.

The episode streams on Hulu and Disney+ for bundle subscribers. It follows ‘Treehouse of Horror Presents: The Revengening’, a separate Halloween special that aired on October 18. The incident shows a risk that comes with putting realistic-looking web addresses on screen. Viewers love hunting for hidden jokes in ‘The Simpsons’, and a background sign was always likely to attract attention.

For a series known for its dense sight gags, this one turned into a cautionary tale. It’s also a reminder that anything shown on screen can be looked up within minutes once an episode airs. Despite the mix-up, the ‘Treehouse of Horror’ tradition remains a beloved part of the Halloween season.
Fans continue to celebrate the specials, with themed food even appearing at Halloween Horror Nights in Hollywood this year. Whether the gag becomes a footnote or a lasting piece of ‘The Simpsons’ trivia, it has certainly made this year’s special one of the most talked-about in recent memory.
Should The Simpsons avoid showing realistic website addresses after this year's Treehouse of Horror mishap?
