Few roles in Hollywood come with as much pressure as Batman. Ever since DC Studios announced ‘The Brave and the Bold’ in 2023, fans have been speculating about who will play Bruce Wayne in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DC Universe.

The project’s path hasn’t been straightforward. Andy Muschietti was chosen to direct based on his work on ‘The Flash’, but that film’s underwhelming box office fueled rumors about his future, and Gunn has confirmed that the creative plans for Batman have changed since the original announcement.

Now Gunn has shared an encouraging update. Speaking on ‘The Suicide Squad: Is It Canon?’, the new podcast he hosts with Jennifer Holland and Steve Agee, the DC Studios co-CEO said the DCU’s Batman hasn’t been cast yet but that an announcement isn’t far away.

Gunn said he plans to consider every option, including actors who may already have smaller roles elsewhere in the DC Universe. That detail has fans wondering whether a familiar face could end up wearing the cowl.

He also explained what excites him most about the search. Gunn said he’s looking forward to choosing the actor who is genuinely the best fit for the role, the same approach he took when casting Superman.

When Agee asked about the character’s age, Gunn offered another key detail. He said the new Bruce Wayne will be roughly the same age as David Corenswet’s Superman. That update appears to put to rest rumors that DC Studios wanted a much older actor for the part. A Batman closer in age to Clark Kent could also shape the dynamic between the 2 heroes as the DCU expands.

The comment follows Gunn’s previous insistence that casting decisions are driven by finding the right performer, not by fitting a specific image of the character. While casting is moving forward, the film itself still has open questions. Gunn recently denied a rumor that ‘The Brave and the Bold’ had been put on hold until the Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount merger was settled.

It’s still unclear whether Batman will debut in that film or show up somewhere else in the DCU first. Muschietti’s status as director also hasn’t been officially confirmed. When a fan asked on Threads whether the plans for Batman had changed, Gunn replied with a simple yes, suggesting fans may see something different from what was originally announced.

The DCU’s Batman won’t be the only version on screen. Matt Reeves’ ‘The Batman Part II’ is set for 2028, and Peter Safran has said the film won’t be shelved despite Reeves recently pausing production for a personal matter.

Safran described the footage so far as fantastic. The animated film ‘Dynamic Duo’ is also slated for 2028, giving fans plenty of Batman content in the coming years. Meanwhile, Gunn’s ‘Man of Tomorrow’ is in post-production, continuing Corenswet’s story as Superman. With so much happening across the franchise, introducing the DCU’s own Dark Knight is one of the studio’s biggest decisions.

With an announcement apparently close, speculation is heating up again. Gunn’s hint that an actor already in the DCU could be considered has fans revisiting the existing cast. Whoever lands the role will have a lot to live up to. Gunn’s focus on talent over expectations suggests the studio is aiming for a fresh take on the Caped Crusader that can stand next to Corenswet’s Superman for years to come.
