Jamie Dornan Isn’t Trying To Outdo Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn in ‘The Hunt for Gollum’
Few roles in fantasy film carry as much weight as Aragorn. Viggo Mortensen’s take on the ranger-turned-king in Peter Jackson’s ‘The Lord of the Rings’ trilogy became one of the most beloved performances in the genre, so recasting him was always going to make fans nervous.
That’s the challenge Jamie Dornan has taken on. Warner Bros. and New Line announced at CinemaCon in April that the actor, known for ‘The Fall’ and the ‘Fifty Shades’ films, would play Strider in ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum’.
Now Dornan has opened up about stepping into such iconic boots. In an interview with Italian magazine L’Officiel, he admitted the role comes with real pressure and made it clear he isn’t trying to replace the original.
“But for me, Aragorn will always be just Viggo,” Dornan told L’Officiel Italia, calling Mortensen’s performance one of his all-time favorites. He explained that he’s honored to try to recapture some of the energy Mortensen originally brought to the character. He also stressed that there’s no part of him trying to outdo his predecessor, and said he’ll simply do his best with a super-iconic role.
Dornan’s humble approach is likely to reassure many longtime fans. Instead of reinventing the character, he seems focused on honoring what made Mortensen’s version so memorable.

There’s also an encouraging sign from the original Aragorn himself. According to director Andy Serkis, Mortensen has approved of Dornan taking on the part, which should help ease some of the debate around the recasting.
Dornan’s comments come as the conversation around legacy roles keeps growing in Hollywood, with fans often wary when beloved characters are recast. His message is a clear sign of respect for the performance that came before.
Serkis is pulling double duty on the film. He’s directing and also returning as Gollum, the role he made famous in the original trilogy. Peter Jackson isn’t directing this time, but he’s involved as a writer and producer. The story follows the mission to track down Gollum, adapting a part of J.R.R. Tolkien’s story that has never been put on screen before.

Plot details are still largely under wraps. The film is planned as a standalone project, though more ‘Lord of the Rings’ movies are expected to follow. Dornan is joined by several returning stars. Ian McKellen is back as Gandalf, Elijah Wood returns as Frodo, and Lee Pace reprises his role as Thranduil, the Elvenking.
Newcomers include Leo Woodall as Halvard, a fellow Dúnedain Ranger who accompanies Strider. Kate Winslet has also joined the cast in an undisclosed major role. Dornan and Woodall appeared together in the L’Officiel feature, hinting that their characters’ partnership will be a key part of the story.
‘The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum’ is set to open in theaters worldwide on December 17, 2027. It’s part of a strong 2027 slate that also includes several other major franchise releases.
For fans of the original trilogy, the film offers a chance to return to Middle-earth with a mix of familiar faces and new perspectives. With Serkis directing and Jackson involved, expectations are high.

Dornan’s thoughtful approach to playing Aragorn suggests he understands exactly what the role means to audiences. Whether he can win over skeptical fans will become clear when the film arrives next December.
