Johnny Depp has spent much of the past few years rebuilding his public image, and his appearances outside of acting have helped. His work as a touring musician has been a big part of that, and this week his ties to rock royalty led to one of the most talked-about moments of the Los Angeles concert season.

The setting was big from the start. Aerosmith returned to the Hollywood Bowl on Thursday, October 29, for ‘California, Dream On: Aerosmith & Friends’, the first of 2 all-star shows and the band’s first concert since September 9, 2023, when they played UBS Arena in Elmont, New York.

As the night neared its end, Depp was called on stage to play guitar with his Hollywood Vampires bandmate, Joe Perry. According to the fan account Depp Crave, he joined in on one of the final 2 songs of the evening, and a fan video shared by @ForeverWyno quickly spread on X.

The song was “Train Kept A Rollin’,” with Dave Grohl on drums. TMZ reported that Depp hugged Perry as he walked out, then nodded when Steven Tyler played a few harmonica notes to signal that he knew the song and was ready to go.

Depp was grinning and moving around the stage throughout the performance. The fan who filmed the moment summed up the crowd’s excitement with an all-caps post announcing that Depp was in the building.

The night meant a lot to Aerosmith fans. A serious vocal injury forced Tyler to cut short the band’s ‘Peace Out’ farewell tour, and in August 2024 the group announced it was retiring from touring altogether.

That made Thursday’s return feel like an event. Liv Tyler, Steven’s daughter, and Alicia Silverstone, who starred in the band’s “Crazy” music video in 1994, introduced Aerosmith before they launched into a 45-minute closing set.

Grohl played drums on the first 5 songs, including “Toys In The Attic,” “Sweet Emotion” and “Dream On.” For the final song, “Walk This Way,” founding drummer Joey Kramer made a surprise return. He had not performed with the band since 2020.

Depp was far from the only famous face of the night. The bill included Guns N’ Roses, Heart, the Black Crowes, Sammy Hagar, Billy Idol with Steve Stevens, Warren Haynes, Eric Church, and Godsmack’s Sully Erna, each with a slot of their own before Aerosmith closed the show.

Many of the guests paid tribute by covering Aerosmith classics. Heart played “Janie’s Got A Gun,” Church took on “I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing,” and Guns N’ Roses mixed “Last Child” and “Seasons Of Wither” in with their own hits, “Welcome To The Jungle” and “Paradise City.”

Near the end of the show, Tyler thanked his bandmates for the ride they had shared over more than 5 decades together. Comedian Bill Burr called these appearances the final 2 shows in Aerosmith’s history, though no breakup has been officially announced.

The appearance caps an eventful stretch for Depp. TMZ noted that he was largely shunned by Hollywood for several years after his legal battle with Amber Heard, but fans gave him a warm welcome when he promoted ‘Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol’ at Comic-Con in July.

His musical partnership with Perry has been a constant through all of it. The Hollywood Vampires have had their own headlines in 2026, including a dispute with a promoter over a canceled concert in Slovakia, but Thursday night was a reminder of the bond between the 2 guitarists.

Aerosmith is set to return to the Hollywood Bowl on Sunday, November 1, for the second ‘California, Dream On’ show. Variety reported that Tom Morello and Run-DMC are expected to appear, keeping the star power going. Whether Depp shows up again is anyone’s guess. For now, the fan video of him trading riffs with Perry is giving rock and movie fans alike something to celebrate.
