Paul Bettany Reveals His Eye Injury on ‘VisionQuest’ Was So Bad It Had To Be Fixed With CGI
Paul Bettany has been playing Vision for more than a decade, and his new Disney+ series has given him some of the most demanding material of his Marvel career. ‘VisionQuest’, the final chapter of the trilogy that began with ‘WandaVision’ and continued with ‘Agatha All Along’, has been one of the studio’s most talked-about shows of the fall.
The 8-episode limited series follows a rebuilt Vision who has had his memories restored but can’t attach any feelings to them. He lives a quiet life working at a pub in Scotland until a bounty is placed on his head, sending him on the run with a teen played by Ruaridh Mollica who may be his reincarnated son.
Now Bettany has shared one of the more surprising stories from the shoot. Appearing on ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ on October 29, the actor revealed that he blew out about 10 blood vessels in his eye while filming, and the damage was serious enough that production had to hide it with CGI.
Bettany explained that he was filming a scene in which Vision pretends to have a device on his head affecting his brain. He admitted that he went much too big with the performance, describing it as wildly overacting.
The injury left his eye bright red for about 2 weeks. Bettany joked that the look was “gorgeous,” but added that he imagines it must have cost the production a lot of money to digitally remove the redness from everything they shot in that time.

Bettany took the experience in good humor. He told Kimmel it was a lesson in less is more, a fitting takeaway for an actor whose character is usually known for calm restraint. He also pointed out the irony of his role. Despite playing a character with powerful vision, Bettany says he is nearsighted and can barely see anything once he takes off his glasses.
The late-night chat also turned to Halloween. Bettany said he grew up in London, where the holiday wasn’t widely celebrated, and only learned about trick-or-treating after watching ‘E.T.’

That led to some confusing moments as a child, since adults who hadn’t seen the film didn’t know why he was knocking on their doors. These days, because he wears the Vision costume almost every day for work, he treats Halloween as a welcome break from dressing up.
Terry Matalas serves as showrunner and director, having taken over when the series was redeveloped in 2024. The cast includes James Spader as Ultron, Todd Stashwick as Paladin, and T’Nia Miller as Jocasta.

The series also brings in several familiar AI names from the MCU. Orla Brady voices F.R.I.D.A.Y., James D’Arcy plays J.A.R.V.I.S., Emily Hampshire plays E.D.I.T.H., and Faran Tahir returns as Raza from the original ‘Iron Man’.
Bettany has described Vision’s inner world as a mansion-like “mind space” filled with AI personalities. He compared the idea to Pixar’s ‘Inside Out’, suggesting the show takes a creative approach to exploring the character’s identity.
‘VisionQuest’ premiered on Disney+ in mid-October, with the first 2 episodes also screening at the BFI London Film Festival. New episodes arrive on Tuesdays, and the finale is set for November 10.
With only a few episodes left, fans now have a funny behind-the-scenes story to keep in mind while watching. Somewhere in the series is a scene where Vision’s composure hides an actor who got a little too carried away.
How are you enjoying Paul Bettany’s return as Vision in VisionQuest?
