‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Presales Are Catching Up to ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ in Early Tracking

Marvel’s biggest benchmark this year came from its friendly neighborhood wall-crawler. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ opened to roughly $360 million domestically and around $932 million worldwide over the summer, beating the domestic opening record of $357.1 million set by ‘Avengers: Endgame’.

Now the question is whether ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ can match that kind of debut. The film opens on December 18, and its ticket sales have been closely watched since premium-format presales started in July, months before release.

The latest tracking data suggests the film is picking up serious momentum. According to box office tracker TheFlatLannister, whose numbers were shared on Reddit’s r/boxoffice community, ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ has seen “pretty amazing growth” in recent days across 3 tracked samples, labeled TC1, TC2 and TC3.

In TC1, Saturday sales for Doomsday have matched where ‘Brand New Day’ stood 8 days before release, while Sunday has matched its level 5 days out. TC2 showed Saturday matching ‘Brand New Day’ at 10 days out and Sunday at 6 days out.

TC3 told a similar story. Saturday sales matched ‘Brand New Day’ at 7 days before release, while Sunday matched its level 5 days out, despite Doomsday still being well over a month away.

These comparisons look at how many tickets each film had sold at the same point before release. Doomsday reaching Spider-Man’s late-stage numbers this early suggests its sales are running far ahead of where the record-breaker was at this stage.

Comic Basics also reported that Doomsday’s Friday sales were roughly 4 times higher than ‘Brand New Day”s first end-of-day tally. The tracker noted that some of the recent growth may have come from new promotional news.

There are important caveats, though. These figures come from limited samples rather than studio reports, and presales for huge fan-driven films can be front-loaded before a final-week surge.

Doomsday’s presales have been strong from the start. Variety reported that the film earned $16.5 million in the first 24 hours of limited premium presales, roughly double the first-day total for ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’.

Disney’s finance chief later said domestic presales had passed $50 million, with more than 70% tied to Infinity Vision. Global Box Office reported domestic presales above $65 million around 50 days out, and worldwide presales crossing $100 million on October 6. Variety also reported that premium showtimes for December 17 and 18 were largely sold out across the US. More screenings have been added for Christmas Day and beyond.

Doomsday won’t have access to domestic IMAX screens, since ‘Dune: Part Three’ opens the same day with an exclusive IMAX run. In response, Disney launched Infinity Vision, a certification program for premium large-format theaters that meet standards for screen size, sound, and brightness.

The format has quickly become central to the film’s sales. Its first test, the ‘Avengers: Endgame’ re-release, earned 52% of its opening weekend from Infinity Vision screens. Projections remain mixed. Global Box Office has forecast a domestic opening of $260 million to $300 million, which would fall short of both ‘Endgame’ and ‘Brand New Day’, while other reports have floated the possibility of a $1 billion global opening.

Prediction markets currently lean toward Doomsday posting the year’s biggest opening weekend. If the latest tracking trend continues, the race with Spider-Man could come down to the final days before release.

Do you think Avengers: Doomsday will beat Spider-Man: Brand New Day to claim the year's biggest opening weekend?
