‘Heat’ Director Michael Mann Accidentally Shoots Himself in the Leg at a Los Angeles Gun Range
Michael Mann has spent decades building a reputation as one of Hollywood’s most meticulous crime filmmakers. The director behind ‘Heat’ is known for his obsessive attention to realism, especially when it comes to how his characters handle weapons on screen.
At 83, Mann is still hard at work. He is developing a sequel to ‘Heat’ for Warner Bros., based on the novel he co-wrote with Meg Gardiner, and the project has been one of the most closely watched crime films in development.
Now the filmmaker has been involved in an unexpected incident. According to TMZ, which first reported the story, Mann accidentally shot himself in the leg on Saturday afternoon at The Range L.A., a gun range in West Los Angeles near Sawtelle Japantown.
A source told TMZ that the incident happened around 4 p.m., when Mann was apparently trying to holster his weapon, and it discharged. LAPD and the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to the scene, and Mann was taken to a local hospital by ambulance.
LAPD described the situation as a training accident, confirming that Mann accidentally fired the weapon into his own leg and had no intention of harming himself. There is reassuring news about his condition. According to TheWrap, Mann’s representatives described the injury as superficial and said the weapon went off accidentally as it was being holstered.
His team said he was treated and was being released. TheWrap also reported that Mann was stable when police and medics arrived. The reps also noted that Mann is an experienced target shooter. That background fits his long-standing hands-on approach to the gun work that has become a signature of his films.
The incident comes as Mann pushes ahead with his long-awaited sequel. Several outlets reported that the director is currently in pre-production on ‘Heat 2’, while earlier reports had said the film was planned as a 7-month shoot running from September 2026 through March 2027.
Dark Horizons reported in June that the shoot was set to take place in Los Angeles and Paraguay, with Mann also scouting locations in Mexico for the $200 million production. There has been no indication so far that the accident will affect the film’s schedule.
The cast has been a major talking point. Christian Bale is the only confirmed casting so far, set to play Vincent Hanna, the role originally played by Al Pacino in the 1995 film. Leonardo DiCaprio has been reported for one of the lead roles, with Dark Horizons saying he was deciding between Neil McCauley and Chris Shiherlis.
Adam Driver and Stephen Graham have also been linked to the project, with their roles reportedly depending on DiCaprio’s choice. Austin Butler had previously been rumored as well, though his status remains unclear. TheWrap listed Driver, DiCaprio and Bale as part of the reported cast.
The news quickly spread among film fans online, with many worried about the veteran director’s health. The good news is that his injury appears to be minor, and he was released after treatment. For now, fans can look forward to more updates on ‘Heat 2’ as Mann continues building one of the most anticipated crime sequels in years.
