Few characters have had a journey through the Marvel Cinematic Universe quite like Peggy Carter. Hayley Atwell first played the agent in ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’, went on to lead her own series, ‘Agent Carter’, and later appeared as Captain Carter in ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’.

Now Atwell is returning as Peggy in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, which opens in theaters on December 18. Marvel has kept her role in the Russo brothers’ film under wraps, leaving fans eager for any clue about what’s in store.

Atwell has now offered a glimpse into how the film came together. Speaking about her role, she revealed that multiple versions of Peggy Carter’s storyline were shot for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, with some making the final cut while others were dropped.

“We tried different things, we shot different things,” Atwell said during an interview with The Playlist. She explained that there were different storylines, with “some picked up, some developed, some dropped away.”

Atwell made the comments on The Playlist’s Bingeworthy podcast while promoting her new MGM+ series, ‘Treasure Island’. She didn’t say which storylines were cut, or whether any of them involved Peggy specifically.

According to Dark Horizons, Atwell explained that the directors and writers made changes on the fly during filming. She described the process as an effort to find what made the most sense for the characters.

She also praised the scale of the project. Atwell called the ambition and scope of ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ extraordinary, and said the filmmakers showed meticulous care for delighting fans. That kind of flexible approach isn’t unusual for a film this size. Still, her comments suggest audiences may only see one version of several ideas the team explored.

The question of Peggy’s future has been on fans’ minds since ‘Avengers: Endgame’, which seemingly gave her and Steve Rogers a happy ending together. Asked about Marvel revisiting that ending, Atwell said she has been happy with the character work in some projects but not all.

She pointed to the animated series ‘What If…?’, saying viewers saw Peggy do much more there than she had been able to do in live action. Atwell has also said she would like to see the character take on a more action-focused role.

If fans want more Peggy and Marvel wants to develop her further, Atwell said she’d be willing to have that conversation. That leaves the door open for more after ‘Doomsday’. Marvel’s secrecy has given fans plenty to speculate about. One unconfirmed leak claims that one of Doctor Doom’s Latverian Witches is a shapeshifter disguised as Peggy, used to deceive Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers.

Evans’ return as Steve has been one of the film’s biggest talking points, and the first teaser showed him on a motorcycle and later holding a baby. None of the details about Peggy’s role have been confirmed, though.

Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ brings together the Avengers, the X-Men and the Fantastic Four to face Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom. With the final trailer expected in mid-November, Marvel may soon reveal more about Peggy’s part in the story.

Until then, Atwell’s comments add another layer of mystery to one of the most anticipated films of the year. Fans will have to wait and see which version of Peggy made it to the screen.
