Disney Is Bringing a Villain to ‘Frozen’ Who Could Be Even Stronger Than Elsa
Arendelle is getting ready for its next big adventure. Disney Animation is hard at work on ‘Frozen 3’, with Jennifer Lee returning to write and direct, Trent Correy serving as co-director, and songwriters Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez back to craft the music.
Fans got their first real look at the sequel during Disney’s D23 showcase in August. The footage showed Anna and Kristoff’s wedding night being interrupted when a curtain of Northern Lights descends over Arendelle’s fjord, and Elsa discovering a frozen walkway leading into the aurora.
Now Disney Animation chief Jared Bush has shared a major update about the film’s antagonist. Speaking with Collider’s Steve Weintraub at the SCAD Savannah Film Festival, Bush confirmed that the sequel will introduce “a new villain into the world of Frozen, and someone who may be more powerful than Elsa,” he told Collider.
That’s a big claim given Elsa’s abilities. The franchise has rarely featured a traditional villain who could truly challenge her magic. The character’s casting hasn’t been announced, but Bush confirmed the actress has already recorded her performance multiple times. He told fans to stay tuned.

The villain’s voice was heard at D23, but her face was never shown. In the footage, she appeared as a woman in a dark cloak with short black hair and a cape. She addressed Anna and Elsa as “the famous sisters of Arendelle.” Multiple reports from the event described her as having ice powers that rival Elsa’s, though her name, identity, and motives are still a mystery.
Idina Menzel described the world beyond the portal as wilder and more dangerous than anything Elsa has ever created. That suggests the sisters will face their toughest test yet. Bush also confirmed how the story begins. He explained that the film opens with Anna and Kristoff’s wedding, following Kristoff’s proposal at the end of ‘Frozen 2’, and noted that there isn’t much time between the 2 films.

The songwriting team is already deep into the music. Bush said Anderson-Lopez and Lopez are about 5 songs in and are currently working on one of the film’s most emotional numbers. He also teased a spectacular song around the wedding, though he declined to share more details.

The sequel will also give Olaf a romance. His love interest is a snowy girlfriend named Samantha, which pays off a mention from the ‘Frozen 2’ post-credits scene. At D23, Josh Gad performed a new song for Olaf about Samantha, described as a blend of calypso and disco. Menzel and Kristen Bell also performed new material on stage.
Bush revealed that the creative team is also thinking ahead to ‘Frozen 4’, which Lee is also writing and directing. He said that means building toward something that feels worthy of the end of a franchise.

Still, he explained that the plot is secondary to the characters’ journey for him. He added that he avoids planning too rigidly because it can stifle the creative process. ‘Frozen 3’ arrives in theaters on November 24, 2027, keeping the Thanksgiving release window used by the first 2 films.
Bell returns as Anna, Menzel as Elsa, Jonathan Groff as Kristoff, and Gad as Olaf. With a powerful new threat and a wedding to celebrate, the next chapter promises both big emotions and big magic. Bush made it clear the team wants the film to be the best it can possibly be.
