New ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Synopsis Calls Doctor Doom Reed Richards’ Equal
Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom is the most closely watched part of Marvel’s next big team-up, and every official detail about him gets picked apart. The villain at the center of ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ has been kept mostly hidden behind his mask so far. A familiar face may be hiding under that iconic mask, but this isn’t Tony Stark, the character Downey played in the MCU for over a decade before his death in 2019’s ‘Avengers: Endgame’.
Doom’s story started a year before ‘Doomsday’. In the MCU, Doom first appeared during the end credits of 2025’s ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’, in a time jump four years after that film’s events. In ‘First Steps’, Doom also didn’t show up as Latveria’s representative when the Future Foundation was formed at the United Nations assembly, leaving his country’s seat empty.
Now fans have an official character description. MCU Film News shared a new synopsis for Downey’s Doctor Doom, describing him as “a formidable, mysterious king of Latveria” who “commands magic and technology and possesses intellect and willpower equal to Reed Richards.” It adds that “he has a deep, complicated history with the Fantastic Four, and Latveria is not part of the Future Foundation founded by Sue Storm.”
The comparison to Reed Richards stands out. In the comics, Mister Fantastic’s archenemy is Doctor Doom, who is obsessed with proving he is smarter than Reed Richards. In Richards, Doom met the first person who could match him intellectually, and he became increasingly jealous of his rival.

Pedro Pascal is set to face him again. Pascal played the main Richards in 2025’s ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ and will return in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and 2027’s ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’. If Doom really is Reed’s equal, that rivalry could drive much of the film.
The synopsis also confirms that Doom’s power comes from 2 sources. Marvel’s marketing has already shown his sorcery, including the D23 trailer moment where Doom blocks Thor’s Stormbreaker, repels him with green energy, and raises a collection of classic X-Men Sentinels. He declares, “Hell answers to me, for I am Doom.”

His high-tech side has been showing up too. Recent promotional material has revealed Doombots, Doomstadt Tower, and a version of the character called “Lord Doom.” Together, they fit the synopsis’s description of a ruler who uses both magic and machines.
The final line of the synopsis connects to earlier hints. An in-universe promotional poster showed Latveria’s closed borders, hinting at why the country didn’t join the world’s efforts to protect Earth from Galactus in ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’. Sue Storm leads the Future Foundation, a philanthropic organization promoting world peace, so Doom’s refusal to join says a lot about how he sees himself.

His interest in the Fantastic Four also seems personal. TV Insider writes that Doom’s vengeance in ‘Doomsday’ is a direct consequence of the Avengers’ time-traveling in ‘Endgame’, and that he blames the heroes for the actions that helped them defeat Thanos. Exactly why he does so is still a mystery.
