Absolute Batman’s Animated Future Just Got a Whole Lot Clearer, According to Scott Snyder
The Absolute Universe has quickly become one of DC’s biggest publishing success stories, and now that momentum is carrying over into animation. The Absolute Batman comic reimagines the Dark Knight as a working class hero with no manor or fortune, facing corruption and terrifying new foes. That fresh take is exactly what caught Hollywood’s attention.
Fans got their first taste of what was coming a few weeks back. During Warner Bros. Animation and DC Studios’ presentation at the Annecy International Animation Festival, the studios officially announced an adult animated adaptation of ‘Absolute Batman,’ with series writer Scott Snyder serving as executive producer and showrunner. Original series artist Nick Dragotta is also attached as a producer, and the announcement was met with loud applause at Annecy, where attendees were shown first look artwork from the upcoming series.
Now Snyder is offering the clearest picture yet of what that series will actually look and feel like. Speaking on the AIPT Comics Podcast, he explained the goal is not to reinvent the story but to blow it up in scale. “We want it to be as though the comic is just almost a bigger, better, more robust version of the comic on the screen,” Snyder said, adding that “it really looks like the comic book come to life three dimensionally in the coolest way.”
According to Snyder, the show is still in its foundational stage rather than actual episode writing. He revealed that he and Dragotta are deeply involved in shaping the project, with Snyder serving as showrunner and Dragotta acting as an executive producer, and the pair had just met over the past weekend to dig into development. “The first steps are just writing a series format, kind of a Bible for the whole series, and showing how many episodes we think it is and the structure of it,” Snyder explained.
Snyder also praised the creative freedom DC Studios has given him and Dragotta so far. He specifically credited Warner Bros. Animation’s Peter Girardi, along with DC Studios co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran, for keeping the original creators central to the process. That kind of hands-on involvement from the source material’s own writer and artist is rare for a big studio adaptation, and it has fans cautiously optimistic that the show will honor what made the comic click in the first place.
Part of that faith comes from how the comic has performed on the page. The Absolute line has sold more than six million copies to date, with ‘Absolute Batman’ number one reaching multiple printings, making it one of DC’s biggest publishing initiatives in years.
Animation, Snyder noted, actually opens doors the monthly comic format cannot. He compared a splash page moment to something that could stretch out for several seconds on screen, giving the team room to build what he called connective tissue between characters. He pointed to his own ‘Wytches’ adaptation as proof that expanding a story does not mean abandoning its heart, and said the animated ‘Absolute Batman’ will follow that same philosophy.
Do you think the Absolute Batman series can give the comics justice?
No release date, platform, or voice cast has been announced yet, but the vision is clearly taking shape behind the scenes. With Snyder and Dragotta this locked in creatively, how do you think this bigger, bolder take on ‘Absolute Batman’ should handle its supporting cast once episodes finally start rolling out?
