Aquaman Takes Center Stage in DC Universe: New Gods, Kaijus, and Atlantis Mysteries in ‘Aquaman’ #1
Aquaman is back with new powers and a new mission! Created by popular writers Jeremy Adams (The Flash, Green Lantern) and artist John Timms (Action Comics) this is a new beginning for the character, and boy do we have quite a few things to share.
The story places Aquaman at the center of the DC Universe, tying into the mystery of Atlantis’s disappearance or possible destruction. Aquaman follows clues that lead him to a satellite orbiting Earth, where he discovers a transportation gate that could take him somewhere unexpected.
Aquaman has gained new water-controlling powers, similar to his wife Mera’s, after the events of Absolute Power. The Atlantean parliament also reinstated him as king during a crisis. Using his new abilities, Aquaman saves a plane from crashing by creating a water column, with Mera helping him.
Afterward, they return to Atlantis, where Arthur faces a backlog of royal duties. Meanwhile, Jackson Hyde shares that he found a strange magic pearl that gives him a bad feeling. He and Garth promise to investigate further.
During a dull day of royal duties, Aquaman gets a report about a giant water monster attacking Daytona Beach. Excited for action, he swims to the surface and battles the creature, but hitting it doesn’t work since it’s made of water. Using his new aquakinesis, he causes the monster to dissolve back into the ocean. Suddenly, Mera urgently calls him back to Atlantis, where he arrives just in time to see the city vanish in a flash of light.
Aquaman finds the strange pearl still intact in the ruins and takes it to the Watchtower for Zatanna to examine. She discovers the pearl holds ancient power but can’t get more details because the magic around it is hiding information. However, she senses something else with the same magical signature deep in the ocean.
Arthur, along with Batman and Wonder Woman in the Javelin, travels to an underwater location where they find a mysterious arch covered in sea plants. When Arthur brings the pearl close, it flies into the arch, opening a portal. Despite Batman’s warning that it could be a trap, Aquaman swims through, hoping to find his family.
As the portal closes behind him, the plants burn away, revealing the arch’s true shape: Darkseid’s Omega symbol.
The future issues tease extreme events for Arthur. After Atlantis is destroyed, Arthur is left as a king without a home. His new water-controlling powers and a mysterious portal could hold the key to bringing Atlantis back—possibly from Apokolips!
Arthur must train harder than ever to recover his kingdom, but his journey takes him to dangerous places. Temptation and darkness pull him deeper as new enemies appear, including mer-mercenaries and Lori Lemaris, who has her own plans. Arthur’s adventure is about to get even bigger and more intense as he fights for his kingdom and his people.
