The second season of ‘Arcane’ was recently released, and much like the first season the show received universal acclaim. There was some criticism regarding the pacing of the show, but generally, it was a massive success.
The heart of the show remained its characters, especially one romance that was brewing for a long time at this point. The final episodes of ‘Arcane’ season 2 bring a satisfying resolution to Caitlyn and Vi’s relationship.
Despite the tragedy in the season, their developing romance was one of the highlights. Although their growing bond faced a heartbreaking setback, the writers did an excellent job of making viewers worry they wouldn’t reconcile.
The emotional payoff when they do is one of the best parts of the season, and Vi’s story, along with her relationship with Caitlyn, makes the ending even more rewarding.
However, one of the most notable scenes in the show was also one scene that was, according to the producer, severely cut back on.
After the Season 2 finale, co-creator Christian Linke revealed that the Vi and Caitlyn romance scene was changed during production. In a live stream with streamer Necrit94, Linke explained that the original version of the scene, which fans praised for its portrayal of queer love, was longer but was shortened before airing. He referred to the final version as “the dialed-back version.”
Linke: “This was the dialed back version.”
Necrit: “Woah, it was longer?”
Linke: “Yes.”
Linke explained that the scene was changed because the team received a “slap on the wrist” for the more mature version, though he didn’t specify who gave the feedback. He joked that the scene was extended in the original version, and that if it had stayed that way, ‘League of Legends’ might have received a mature rating.
Necrit: “Because I was like, ‘This is going for awhile. Oh it is still going. Oh it is still going!’ And it went for awhile. So, you are telling me, originally there was more.”
Linke: “Yes. We got a slap on the wrist. League of Legends is going to be rated mature now.”
Linke suggested that the “slap on the wrist” likely came from Netflix or Riot Games, as the original scene could have made League of Legends appear too mature. When asked if the extended cut would ever be released, he joked that it might be on a “French hard drive” and could possibly be included in a future “director’s cut.”
Necrit: “Are you ever going to show the original pitch? There is a really cool fandom that would really like that.”
Linke: “It is probably on some French hard drive. Director’s cut.”
What Linke stated makes sense, considering that the show so far managed to evade being rated R and both Netflix and Riot Games might want to hold onto its current rating for time being.
