Aubrey Plaza Responds to ‘Agatha All Along’ Being Dubbed the “Gayest Marvel Show Ever”: “It better be”
With just a few hours left until the premiere of Agatha All Along, the latest addition to the MCU, early reactions are mostly positive, though some viewers have pointed out a somewhat slow start.
The series follows Agatha Harkness as she escapes her imprisonment by the Scarlet Witch. Upon returning to the world, Agatha finds herself powerless and must form a makeshift coven of both allies and adversaries in order to walk the witches’ road and reclaim her abilities.
Even before the show’s premiere, Agatha All Along was anticipated to make significant strides in queer representation within the MCU. Joe Locke, who plays Billy Kaplan, aka Wiccan—a character who is openly gay in the comics and famously in a relationship with Hulkling—has already addressed this aspect of his role.
Locke acknowledged facing some backlash over his portrayal but stated he isn’t too concerned by it. He also emphasized that the show fully embraces its queer identity, without shying away from it:
The show never shies away from his queerness, but it’s not a defining feature of his character. It’s just one layer of him as a person.
Aubrey Plaza also teased the possibility of a romantic connection between Agatha and her character, the Green Witch Rio Vidal, something that Kathryn Hahn has confirmed.
With its campy tone and musical elements, as Patti LuPone hinted, it’s evident that Agatha All Along is poised to provide significant visibility for the queer community within the MCU.
At the show’s purple carpet premiere, Plaza was asked by a Variety journalist whether she agreed with the claim that it’s the “gayest Marvel show ever.” Plaza’s response was predictably on-brand:
“It better be, cause that’s what I signed up for.”
It’s clear the show is designed for a particular audience, and while it might not appeal to everyone, it feels like a refreshing change in the otherwise formulaic MCU.
