50 Best Dog Movies on Disney+ To Stream Right Now!
A dog is a man’s best friend, which is why it’s not rare for us to see our canine companions appear in movies, animated films, TV shows, and even documentaries. There’s a special bond one creates with their doggo, and when you see that bond portrayed on the big screen, it always hits right in the feels. Honestly, I cry on dog movies more than any romantic drama – ever!
The magic behind it, though, is that they don’t have to be sad – there are tons of happy, funny, witty, and inspirational movies about dogs that will amuse your kids or give that awesome unwinding effect we all so desperately need sometimes after a hard week’s work.
And I’ve found that Disney+ is filled with them, so without further ado, here’s an epic list of the 50 best dog movies on Disney+ you can stream right now. The list is not ranked in any way but rather ordered alphabetically. Enjoy!
(101) One Hundred and One Dalmatians (1961)

Synopsis: Pongo and Perdita make their owners acquainted in a park, and before you know it, they’re all living together, and the happy doggo parents have a litter of fifteen wonderful Dalmatian puppies. However, Cruella De Vil wants them for their fur and will stop at nothing to get them.
In the end, the puppies, Pongo, and Perdita end up rescuing an entire factory full of Dalmatian puppies, with the help of local London dogs, leaving their owners with a litter, not of fifteen but 101 Dalmatians.

Synopsis: This was a live-action remake of Disney’s animated classic from 1961. Glenn Close played an iconic role in portraying Cruella. I really love the official IMDb synopsis that sums up the film perfectly: “An evil high-fashion designer plots to steal dalmatian puppies in order to make an extravagant fur coat but creates an extravagant mess instead.”

101 Dalmatians 2: Patch’s London Adventure (2002)

Synopsis: It’s not easy being just one of 101, especially for Patch, who, despite his unique appearance, doesn’t feel special at all. His idol, Thunderbolt – a TV wonder dog – is filming in London, and Patch wants nothing more than to appear there.
The family is moving, however, but Patch gets left behind and embarks on an adventure that not only has him meet his hero, Thunderbolt but becomes one of his crucial team members for a publicity campaign. Little did they know, Cruella is still not done with the Dalmatians…

102 Dalmatians (2000)

Synopsis: Cruella De Vil gets out of prison after long, successful therapy had her completely changed, now loving dogs more than anything. Chloe, her parole officer, happens to have Dalmatians, and Cruella loves them. But, everything falls into the water when she hears the sound of Big Ben, and it snaps her out of the treatment progress.
Now, Cruella De Vil is back with a vengeance, using her newfound friendships and connections to wreak havoc, unlike anything we’ve seen so far!

A Goofy Movie (1995)

Synopsis: This is a classic Disney film starring Goofy the dog and his son, Max. Max promises a silly thing to a girl, and his chances go from bad to horrible when he realizes he has to go on a cross-country road trip with his goofy dad, Goofy. I haven’t seen this one in a while, but I remember it from when I was a kid, and I absolutely enjoyed every second!

An Extremely Goofy Movie (2000)

Synopsis: In the sequel to A Goofy Movie, Max is all grown and has gone to college, but to his horror, his dad Goofy lost his job and realized he couldn’t get another job without a college degree. Benji: The Hunted (1987)

Synopsis: Benji is a dog actor/show dog that was accidentally lost at sea. He eventually finds himself in the wilderness all by himself, finding ways to survive the hardships of stray life – going from luxury to nothing in a matter of seconds. Along the way, he finds four cougar cubs stranded all alone after their mother is shot and killed by hunters.
Benji tries to find ways to keep the cubs alive and defend them from the animals of the wild while trying to make another cougar mother adopt them.
There are several Benji movies on Disney+, but I love cats, so I found this one to be the most amusing – hence, a spot on this list.

Beverly Hills Chihuahua (2008)

Synopsis: Although the film gained traction and popularity, it’s one of my least favorite movies on this list. In the film, a Chihuahua from Beverly hills named Chloe is lost while on vacation in Mexico and is now trying to find her way back home. There are sequels to the film also on Disney+, but I won’t put every single one on the list.

Bolt (2008)

Synopsis: Bolt is a star of a sci-fi action show, where he believes he has superpowers. After accidentally getting lost, Bolt meets an array of characters – including a stray cat named Mittens – as he tries to find a way back home to the studio. Soon, Bolt realizes that he might not have superpowers at all and that the show actually isn’t real.

Doctor Dolittle (1998)

Synopsis: Doctor Dolittle is a veterinarian, and one day, he discovers that he can actually talk to his patients, the animals, regardless of their species. It was one of my favorite movies when I was a kid and one where I grew to love Eddie Murphy. It’s not only about doggos, although a dog is one of the main supporting characters in the film.

Eight Below (2006)

Synopsis: The Disney-produced movie starring Paul Walker follows an expedition in Antarctica, where a sled dog trainer and his colleagues have to leave their polar base due to a heavy snowstorm coming in. The dogs are left tied at the base to be rescued once the crew returns to the base, but in the meantime, their mission is called off, so the dogs are left there all alone.
Jerry struggles to find a sponsor to help him get back to pick up his beloved furry friends while the dogs spend months barely surviving and fending for themselves.

Far From Home: The Adventures of Yellow Dog (1995)

Synopsis: A boy and his dog, Yellow – a stray who he had adopted – fall overboard while sailing with their family. They are left stranded somewhere in the wilderness with nothing – and no one – to help them survive but themselves.

Feast (2014)

Synopsis: This is by far the shortest film on the list, with only a 6-minute runtime, but Feast is just too adorable and awesome to miss. The film follows an abandoned dog who stumbles upon a guy on the streets, and the guy adopts him and calls him Winston. The kind man gives him amazing meals, and the film tells his love story throughout those meals.

Frankenweenie (1984)

Synopsis: This short Tim Burton film follows a young boy who has a close bond with his pet dog. When the doggo dies, the boy sets out to revive him, only to have him return in a not-so-friendly manner. There was a full-length feature film made about the same story in 2012, which is also on this list.
Frankenweenie (2012)

Synopsis: Tim Burton returned to stop animation in style with this epic movie about a boy, his dog that passed away, and the monstrous thing called science that got Frankenweenie back to life – but with an unexpected twist. It’s one of my favorite Tim Burton films with a wonderful voice cast, including Winona Ryder, Catherine O’Hara, Martin Short, and others.

Greyfriars Bobby: The True Story of a Dog (1961)

Synopsis: This is actually a true story turned into a classic Walt Disney film. It follows the story of a little grey terrier called Bobby, who shares an undying bond with a shepherd known as Old Jock. Even after Old Jock had died, Bobby never left his side, sleeping right on his grave at the Greyfriars Kirkyard in Scotland.

Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey (1993)

Synopsis: This Disney classic is actually a remake of the 1963 movie The Incredible Journey (also on this list). It follows three pets – an American Bulldog, a Golden Retriever, and a Himalayan cat – who get lost in the Sierra Nevada mountains while on vacation with their owners. The three pets struggle to survive and find their way back home.

Homeward Bound II: Lost in San Francisco (1996)

Synopsis: The sequel has our three amazing pets traveling with their humans again – and getting lost again. Only, this time, they aren’t in the wild, but in the wilderness of a big city – San Francisco. Shadow, Sassy, and Chance are on their way, trying to find the ‘golden bridge’ to get home, only to realize that the Golden Bridge isn’t golden at all.

Hounded (2001)

Synopsis: Jay is a smart kid who’s competing for a scholarship with Ronny, the principal’s son. Jay makes a killer presentation and speech, but it’s taken away by the headmaster and given to Ronny. Ronny uses Jay’s speech and kills it, getting the scholarship over Jay.
In retribution, Jay breaks into his pool house to steal the speech back while nobody is home – except for their dog, Camille. The seemingly tiny, cute doggo follows Jay home and goes berserk, and now Jay has to scramble to set things straight.

Synopsis: This epic, 45-minute National Geographic documentary walks us through how dogs were domesticated and how certain breeds and varieties came to look as they do today. Every part of their bodies – ears, tails, fur, paws – has a deep purpose intertwined into the evolution, survival, and even behavior of dogs. This is definitely a dog-lover documentary.
Iron Will (1994)

Synopsis: Will Stoneman is a young, inexperienced dog sled rider who is left to take care of his mother alone after his father tragically passes away. He needs to make money somehow, so Will signs up for a super hard race consisting of several days of dogsled riding under harsh conditions.
Due to his inexperience, Will’s iron will, if you will (that’s a lot of ‘wills’), is the only thing that can keep both him and his dogs alive, let alone win the big cash prize.

Isle of Dogs (2018)

Synopsis: A dog flu breaks out in the futuristic city of Megasaki, Japan, so the cat-loving, aristocratic mayor orders all dogs to be sent to Trash Island. A young boy gets there and uses the help of five other dogs to find his lost pup, Spots.
I won’t even go into any more detail – it’s a Wes Anderson stop-animation with a spectacular cast including Bryan Cranston, Edward Norton, Bill Murray, Jeff Goldblum, Frances McDormand, Harvey Keitel, Ken Watanabe, Yoko Ono, Frank Wood, Tilda Swinton… Do you really need more?

Lady and the Tramp (1955)

Synopsis: Seeing that we’re talking about Disney+, it’s reasonable that there’ll be many Disney animated films on this list. However, it would just feel incomplete without Lady and the Tramp. It follows the story of Lady, a high-end, sheltered Cocker Spaniel, who befriends and falls in love with a mongrel street dog called the Tramp.
As trouble hits at Lady’s home, she embarks on an unforgettable adventure with her friend, who teaches her the way of living as a stray. It’s one of Disney’s all-time classics and one of the most beautiful dog-oriented movies ever.

Synopsis: Disney really upped their game with live-action remakes, and the 2019 Lady and the Tramp was no exception. The story is basically the same as the original 1995 movie (with some tiny changes), but it’s every bit as amusing. You’ll probably end up liking the original better, but that’s what you get with remakes!

Lady and the Tramp II: Scamp’s Adventure (2001)

Synopsis: Years after the first movie, Lady and Tramp now have a pup, Scamp. He feels imprisoned by all the rules and restrictions, so he escapes to try a junkyard life, living as a wild dog. The leader of the Junkyard Dogs, Buster, sees Scamp as a threat, whereas a pup named Angel instantly likes him, longing for the safety of a family home.
It’s not as great as the first Lady and the Tramp film, but it’s quite educational and sweet to watch, especially for kids.

Synopsis: Life Is Ruff was a 2005 Disney Channel TV movie for children. A 13-year-old boy named Calvin wants nothing more than to get a high-end, original issue of his favorite comic book to complete his collection. One day, Calvin is chased on his skateboard by a prize-winning dog, giving him the idea of getting one himself.
He adopts Tyko, a stray mutt that’s everything but a show dog. Is he more than Calvin can handle, or will their bond grow into something more valuable than comic books?

Old Yeller (1957)

Synopsis: I’ll never forget and forgive Disney for the trauma this movie had caused me when I was a kid. I mean, don’t get me wrong – it’s an amazing movie and an absolute classic – but it will break you emotionally.
The story follows Travis Coates, a young farm boy who’s left to look after his family after his dad goes off on a cattle drive somewhere in the 1860s. A stray yellow mutt comes to their farm, and Travis tries shooing him away, but they eventually develop a tight bond after Old Yeller protects Travis and his family from all kinds of wild animal attacks, like wolves, hogs, snakes, and bears.
I won’t spoil the ending, but just… get those tissues out already.

Oliver & Company (1988)

Synopsis: The story was inspired by Oliver Twist, but with an animal-oriented twist – pun intended. In this movie, Oliver is a homeless kitten roaming the dangerous streets of New York before being taken in by a group of stray dogs. The dogs survive by stealing, and on one occasion, Oliver tries to steal from a wealthy, small girl, Jenny.
Little did the kitten know his life was about to change, and his homeless days were about to be a thing of the past.

Pick of the Litter (2019-2020)

Genre: Docuseries, Family
Synopsis: This is the only series on this list, but I just had to include it because it’s one of the coolest Disney+ originals out there if you ask me. Pick of the Litter is a docuseries following six guide dogs in the making as they go through training to help the blind live an easier life. The series is surprisingly amusing and full of surprises, and I warmly recommend it.

Snow Dogs (2002)

Synopsis: Despite not having the best ratings, Snow Dogs is actually quite a popular Disney movie starring Cuba Gooding Jr. He portrays a dentist from Miami who inherits a pack of sled dogs from his mom, along with a property in the mountains. Instead of giving them up, Ted keeps them and starts learning the dogsledding trade to compete in the Arctic Challenge race.

Spooky Buddies (2011)

Synopsis: Spooky Buddies is the second-to-last installment in Disney’s ‘-Buddies’ franchise of TV movies for kids. This one is kind of Halloween-based, as the pups venture on a spooky adventure through a haunted mansion, Scooby Doo-style. All other films of the franchise are also available on Disney+, but you’ll only find two on this list.

Super Buddies (2013)

Synopsis: Super Buddies is the last of the ‘-Buddies’ TV movies, including Santa Buddies (2009), Space Buddies (2009), Spooky Buddies (2011, also on this list), and Treasure Buddies (2012).
Super Buddies is the newest and, to me, the funniest of the bunch, as the five pups become secret superheroes. An alien invasion is about to hit Earth, and the fate of the planet lies in the hands – or paws – of the five Super Buddies.

Teacher’s Pet (2004)

Synopsis: Teacher’s Pet comes with some unorthodox animation but a cool story that your kids will absolutely eat up. Spot is a smart dog that dreams of becoming a real human boy (Pinnochio vibes, am I right?). He finds a scientist who can achieve that for him, so Spot goes on an adventure across the US with his best friend and owner, Leonard.
Things don’t go as planned at Dr. Krank’s when he conducts the experiment on Spot, and now Leonard, his mother, and other pet pals have to do everything they can to make things right.

The Art of Racing in the Rain (2019)

Synopsis: The Art of Racing in the Rain is a wonderful, emotional film about Denny, a Formula One driver, and his Golden Retriever, Enzo. Enzo loves the speed and is almost always in the passenger seat with Denny. They go through hardships together, not just on the race track but in life in general. The film wasn’t a huge hit in theaters, but I really think it should’ve been.

The Call of the Wild (2020)

Synopsis: The Call of the Wild is one of the more recent films on this list, premiering in 2020. Harrison Ford is the lead, and he and his sled dog struggle to survive after being stranded in the unforgiving wilderness of the Yukon. There are tons of films about the same topic on this list, but to me, The Call of the Wild was one of the best. Maybe it’s because I love Han Solo, I don’t know…

The Ugly Dachshund (1966)

Synopsis: It might not be the most well-known movie on the list, but I absolutely love it. So, a married couple has a prize-winning Dachshund who gives birth to three puppies. At the vet, however, the couple takes home another puppy – a Great Dane whose mother doesn’t have the milk to feed him.
Brutus grows up believing he’s a tiny little Dachshund as well, but as he grows bigger, so do the problems with his Dachshund-like behavior.

Togo (2019)

Synopsis: Togo was one of the most brilliant films I had seen in 2019 and one of the best Willem Dafoe roles the prolific actor had ever played. Inspired by a true story, the movie follows Leonhard Seppala and his dog, Togo, who pulled Seppala through the Great Mercy Race in 1925 despite being considered too small and weak for such a feat.
All I’m saying is, damn you, Disney+, because my girlfriend was sobbing for three days from the raw emotion this movie gets out of you.

Turner & Hooch (1989)

Synopsis: Hooch is a huge Dogue de Bordeaux who drools all over the place but is a good dog. However, when his owner, Amos Reed, gets murdered, there’s no one there to take care of him, and Hooch is threatened with being put to rest.
To prevent that from happening, the murder investigator, Scott Turner (Tom Hanks), decides to take the huge dog in and take care of him, with plans to find him a home somewhere. After all, Hooch was the only ‘witness’ to Reed’s death. Little did Turner know, the slobbering menace would become his best pal.
Fun fact: Disney+ made an original series of the same name in 2021 that literally has the same-looking poster as the 1989 film.

Underdog (2007)

Synopsis: It has a horrible rating, but I promise you, Underdog will make you laugh. It follows a Beagle who inadvertently gains superpowers, and now he has to defend the city from Simon Barsinister, a mad, evil scientist. Barsinister is portrayed by Peter Dinklage, while Amy Adams, Jim Belushi, and other notable actors also have roles in the film.

White Fang (1991)

Synopsis: Jack London’s tale of the White Fang has been retold and readapted multiple times, but perhaps my favorite adaptation was this one – with a young Ethan Hawke portraying Jack. He rescues a dog-wolf pup, and the two become close buddies after Jack manages to tame him, naming him White Fang.
It’s a tale of courage, survival, love, and, ultimately, respect toward nature and all living things. Man, I could tear up just by remembering this awesome flick.

White Fang 2: Myth of the White Wolf (1994)

Synopsis: The story of the White Fang continues after Fang joins a friend of his master to try and stop miners from obliteration an ancient sacred land. White Fang helps save one of the last surviving Alaskan Native tribes. The premise might be a bit odd, and the rating a bit low, but it’s actually not as bad of a film as one would believe.

Synopsis: Jack Morgan is a dog psychiatrist. One day he starts hearing the thoughts of one of his doggo patients, Lucky. Lucky’s wealthy owner recently passed away in a mysterious fashion, and now, Jack and Lucky are doing everything they can to find out how he actually died.
