15 Best TV Series Like Avatar: The Last Airbender You Need to Watch (2022 Update)

Avatar: The Last Airbender is a 61-episode American animated television series created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko that aired between February 21 2005 and July 19, 2008 on Nickelodeon. Set in a fictional world heavily inspired by Chinese culture and folklore, the series follows the adventures of Aang, successor to a long line of Avatars, masters of the Four Elements, and his friends on their quest to save the world.

The series presents a rich cultural variety as well as a form of initiatory approach through the evolution of its characters. Avatar is today lauded as one of the best animated series ever.

To honor the epic legacy of Avatar: The Last Airbender, we have decided to compose a list of the best TV series like Avatar: The Last Airbender that every fan should see. The list is going to include a total of 15 different titles which resemble the Avatar: The Last Airbender series in one way or the other.

1. The Legend of Korra

Original Run: April 14, 2012 – December 19, 2014
Number of Episodes: 52

Korra is a waterbender from the Sout. She is also the daughter of the chief of the Southern tribe, who has a strong character. As an Avatar, she must learn to master the four elements. The mastery of water, earth, fire, and air was taught to her throughout her childhood at the South by the masters of the White Lotus, however, she does not manage to control her mastery of air to perfection.

At the start of the series, she goes to live in Republic City to learn airbending from Tenzin, the last Airbender. Republic City was created by Aang and Zuko after a hundred years of war and is home to people from all nations. In the series, several new characters have a connection with the old ones.

For example, Korra will learn airbending with Tenzin, one of Katara and Aang’s three children. Lin Beifong is not only the police chief of Republic City but also the daughter of Toph, who taught her daughters and the police metalbending.

2. Ninjago

Long before time had a name, the world of Ninjago was created by the First Master of Spinjitzu using the four Golden Weapons: the Saber of Fire, the Scythe of Earth, the Shurikens of Ice and the Nunchakus of Lightning. Upon his death, his two sons, Wu and Garmadon, swore to protect the mighty Weapons from any evil forces that would attempt to seize them.

But Garmadon, corrupted by the bite of the Great Devourer, tried to steal them. Wu managed to stop him and banish him to the Dark Realm. He then hid the Weapons all over Ninjago to ensure their protection. Years later, the Skeleton army, originating from the Dark Kingdom and led by Samukai, in the service of Lord Garmadon, threatens again to recover the Weapons.

They retrieve the map showing their location from Kai, a young blacksmith, and kidnap his sister, Nya. Sensei Wu then offers to train him on the path of Spinjitzu by becoming a ninja. Kai agrees and begins his training. He must learn to master Spinjitzu, an ancient martial art. He’s not Wu’s only recruit: there are three other students.

Each of them is linked to one of the Golden Weapons and to an element: Kai is the ninja of Fire, Cole that of Earth, Jay the master of Lightning and Zane of Ice. They will have to learn to master their weapons and their elements.

3. Dragon Ball

This anime tells the story of Son Goku, a little boy who is very good at martial arts, and who has a mysterious monkey tail. He meets a young woman named Bulma, and the two go together in search of the Dragon Balls (seven magic crystal balls which allow, if they are united, to invoke the dragon Shenron, then offering to grant the wish of the one who pronounces a specific formula in front of him), meeting many adversaries along the way (most of them being competitors in the quest for the famous balls, often with selfish or even evil intentions), some of whom later become allies, such as Yamcha or Ten Chin Han.

Already very strong in his normal form (even before he had formal training he stood up to high-level adult fighters), Son Goku transformed into a giant ape after staring at the full moon, unleashing immeasurable destructive power ( without being aware of it and without having the slightest memory afterward).

With another young boy named Krillin, he follows a very rigorous training with Kamé Sennin known as “Turtle Master”, a renowned martial arts master, hiding great power under his appearance as a lecherous old man, who prepares his two disciples for the Grand Tournament. martial arts (Tenkaichi Budokai). More and more formidable enemies appear, until the incarnation of Evil in the form of the Demon Piccolo.

4. Naruto

The story begins during Naruto’s adolescence, around the age of twelve. Orphan dunce and great prankster, he does all possible stupid things to get noticed. His dream: to become the best Hokage in order to be recognized by the inhabitants of his village. Indeed, the nine-tailed fox demon sealed within him has fueled the fear and contempt of the other villagers, who, over time, no longer differentiate between Kyūbi and Naruto.

Despite this, Naruto trains hard in order to become genin, the first level among ninjas. After failing the genin exam 3 times, he finally manages to receive his Konoha forehead protector. He is then included in a team of three ninja apprentices, with Sakura Haruno and the talented Sasuke Uchiha who wants to avenge the people dear to him, by killing his brother Itachi Uchiha.

Shortly after, they meet their jōnin (upper-class ninja), the one who will take care of their training: the mysterious Kakashi Hatake. At first feared and despised by his peers, Naruto will gradually rise in power and gain the respect and affection of the villagers’ thanks, in particular, to the battles he will win against the most powerful enemies of Konoha.

5. My Hero Academia

In a world where 80% of the world’s population has superpowers, here called “Quirks”, we follow the adventures of Izuku Midoriya, one of the few humans without Quirks. Despite this, Izuku still dreams of joining the super-heroic branch of the great Yuei academy and one day becoming one of the greatest heroes of his time. One day, Izuku had the chance to meet his lifelong idol, All Might, the number 1 superhero. This one will bequeath to Izuku his Quirk, the One For All.

6. One Piece

Twenty-two years after Gol D. Roger’s execution, the interest in the One Piece treasure is waning. Many have given up on it, some even wonder if it really exists. In the country of Amestris, a country where alchemy is elevated to the rank of universal science, two brothers, Edward and Alphonse Elric, travel the country in search of the legendary philosopher’s stone. Their father left them and their mother, Trisha Elric, died a few years later of an illness, leaving her two young children behind.

Sometime later, the two brothers try to bring her back thanks to alchemy, defying the law which formally prohibits human transmutation. They will pay a heavy price. Edward, the eldest, will lose his left leg, his little brother his whole body. Ed will sacrifice his right arm by sealing the soul of his little brother Alphonse in armor.

Edward decides to enlist in the army at the age of 12 as a State Alchemist, passes the exam with flying colors, and obtains his alchemist name: Fullmetal. Helped by Edward’s state alchemist status, the two brothers will seek, at the risk of their lives, the stone that will give them back what they have lost, but the secret of the philosopher’s stone is well kept.

8. Boruto: Naruto Next Generations

Aku not having been defeated, the whole world is under his domination. The objective of the samurai is therefore to return to his past in order to prevent the realization of this dark future.

10. Demon Slayer

In Taishō-era Japan, Tanjirō Kamado is the first child of a family of coal merchants whose father has died: to support the family, he sells charcoal in the village below the Mountain. Despite the difficulties of life, they manage to find little happiness in their daily lives. One day, due to rumors circulating about a man-eating demon hanging around after dark, he is forced to spend the night with a Good Samaritan in the village.

Only, everything changes on his return when he detects, thanks to his keen sense of smell, a strong smell of blood: he rushes home and finds his family massacred.

Nezuko, one of his little sisters, is the only survivor although unconscious, and Tanjirō, therefore, takes her with him, to try to bring her to a doctor who could perhaps save her: she however regains consciousness on the way and, having become a demon herself, attacks her brother but still ends up showing signs of human emotions and thoughts.

11. Noragami

Hiyori Iki was a normal middle school student until she was rammed by a bus trying to save someone from being run over. The stranger wears a sports suit and a scarf and later turns out to be God Yato. This incident causes her to become half an ayakashi, a demon. When she meets Yato again and learns that he is a god, she asks him to help her get back to normal. But Yato recently lost his sacred weapon (shinki) – another supernatural being who serves a god and strengthens his power.

He is also only a very little-known and therefore weak god. When both are attacked by an Ayakashi, Yato chooses a boy’s ghost as the new Shinki and names him Yukine. This turns out to be a good weapon, but is very insecure and impetuous due to his early death. Even with Yukine’s help, Yato cannot help Hiyori at first. When he turns to Tenjin, god of education, he sees that his former weapon Mayu now serves him.

Yato’s friend Kofuku, goddess of poverty, and her Shinki Daikoku cannot help them either. The conflicts between Yato and Yukine, who does not feel valued and mourns his human life, increase. Eventually, Yukine starts stealing – since he’s already dead and none of the living notice him, he doesn’t care about their reactions or the damage. But every sin of Yukine carries over to Yato, who is more and more exposed to putrefaction. Still, he doesn’t want to punish Yukine.

12. The Dragon Prince

The series is set in a fantasy world on the continent of Xadia, which is rich in magic derived from six primary sources: the Sun, Moon, Stars, Earth, Sky, and Ocean. However, humans – who could not use primitive magic – discovered the use of black magic, which is fueled by the life essence of animals and magical creatures.

Following this monstrous discovery, they were driven from Xadia by dragons and elves and exiled to the other end of the continent, where they founded the five human kingdoms of the Pentarchy. The lava boundary between the two halves of the continent was guarded by Thunder, the Dragon King. A millennium later, humans have slain the Dragon King and his heir’s egg is missing, presumed destroyed; total war is imminent.
