‘Bleach’: How Powerful Is Gremmy Thoumeaux? Compared to Other Bleach Characters!
Most Bleach characters are actually popular because they are canon or have been present in the anime filler episodes, gaining notoriety despite the criticisms directed towards these episodes. Still, the Bleach universe also contains several light novels that supplement the canon story, most of which have been (semi-officially) confirmed as canon by Kubo. But, this article will focus on the canon manga as we will talk about one specific character from the manga’s second major saga, i.e., Gremmy Thoumeaux, the Sternritter V, “The Visionary.” Gremmy was one of the most interesting characters in the series, and we think he deserves an article of his own.
The article is going to be divided into two major sections. The first one will represent Gremmy’s powers and abilities, while the other one will be a short comparison of Gremmy’s powers and abilities to those of other characters, divided into several subsections. These will not be detailed analyses, just brief comments so you can understand Gremmy’s position in the Bleach lore.
Gremmy’s powers were incredible, but they had some severe limitations
Gremmy Thoumeaux is a very specific character. He is not much of a fighter, and he doesn’t seem to possess any special fighting skills. He probably knows all the basic Quincy techniques but hasn’t used them in the series. In fact, he has exclusively relied on his special ability, The Visionary, which allows him to materialize absolutely anything he imagines.
So, if Gremmy imagines something, then this imagination becomes a reality. For example, Gremmy imagined that Yachiru’s bones were like biscuits, which became a reality. Gremmy can also create and even kill living beings by sheer imagination, as he did with Shaz Domino and Guenael Lee.
He can also use his abilities on himself, giving his body the hardness of steel, for example, or undo even serious injuries in seconds simply by pretending to be unharmed. In addition, he is able to change his surroundings at will, e.g., he can raise a rock platform out of the ground, create a wide crack in the earth, as well as lava, water, steel beams, or even an arsenal of modern firearms appearing out of nowhere.
It turns out that Gremmy has a split personality of sorts: his strongest ability is to manifest this “alternate self” as a doppelganger, which then doubles the power of his The Visionary abilities and enables him to create phenomena of himself to materialize on the scale of a meteorite or to launch your opponent into the vacuum of space.
However, these abilities seem to require a certain amount of mental focus: for example, Gremmy’s battle with Kenpachi made him mentally focused on him, negating the effect he had previously envisioned on Yachiru’s bones. Another way to wound him (albeit temporarily) is to attack Gremmy multiple times faster than he can realize what has happened. This delays his reaction and, thus, his regeneration.
Moreover, it is theoretically quite possible for Gremmy to die as soon as he is no longer convinced of his absolute superiority and mentally considers the possibility of defeat since this negative vision then also materializes.
His own ability was his undoing against Kenpachi: after the commander had withstood all of Gremmy’s attacks, he regarded him as a true monster. To surpass him, he imagined himself being such a powerful monster, which eventually destroyed his body. After Gremmy’s death, all things or beings created by his abilities, even his own body, disappear without leaving a trace.
But, although The Visionary is his primary skill, Gremmy is not completely useless in other skills. On top of what we’ve said, Gremmy is also fast enough to easily dodge Yachiru’s attack with her Shikai; although Yachiru is known for her speed, dodging her Shikai is usually quite difficult.
Gremmy could also stop Yachiru’s arm and block her attack against him to negate damage. On top of that, Gremmy also penetrated Isane Kotetsu’s barrier, which was designed to protect Rose and Kensei from attackers, showing that his Reiryoku is quite high and that he is a master in stealth.
Gremmy could seemingly kill two heavily wounded Shinigami Captains completely unnoticed, while he himself was only discovered when he killed Guenael Lee. Not even Yachiru, who is an expert at sneaking and penetrating herself, could even sense Gremmy’s presence.
His Reiryoku was actually so high that it was comparable to the Reiryoku of a Captain-class shinigami. He was feared by his fellow Quincy, even the more powerful ones like Jugram Haschwalth and Askin Nakk Le Vaar. Askin started running away as soon as he sensed Gremmy fighting, and he commented that he was far too dangerous and that they should have gotten rid of him when they had a chance some time ago. Due to his powers, he was locked away for a long time, so he has no fighting experience.
How powerful is Gremmy Thoumeaux compared to other Bleach characters?
In this section, we will compare Gremmy Thoumeaux to some other strong Bleach characters. These will be brief comparisons whose main goal is to give you a general idea of his powers and abilities.
Gremmy Thoumeaux vs. Ichigo Kurosaki
Gremmy’s hypothetical fight against Ichigo would certainly be interesting, but Ichigo would ultimately triumph. And while Ichigo doesn’t have as much raw power as Kenpachi, nor is he a manipulator like Aizen, his Reiatsu is still strong enough, and since he is a Quincy at that, Gremmy’s abilities would be severely limited against him, so we have Ichigo as the winner here.
Gremmy Thoumeaux vs. Kenpachi Zaraki
This one is not a hypothetical one, actually, and we know that Kenpachi is stronger. Gremmy gave it everything he had in his fight against Kenpachi before realizing that he was fighting a monster; he then tried to imagine himself being as strong as Kenpachi, and that was his fatal blunder, as he couldn’t control so much raw power, which ultimately killed him.
Gremmy Thoumeaux vs. the Royal Guard
There is no dilemma here – Gremmy wouldn’t stand a chance against the members of the Royal Guard. Had Yhwach not cheated his way into the Soul King’s Palace, the combined powers of four Royal Guard Captains were more than enough to eliminate the Schutzstaffel (save for Askin, but he’s a special case), which means that Gremmy wouldn’t really stand a chance against any of them.
Gremmy Thoumeaux vs. Sōsuke Aizen
Aizen is a cunning character, but on top of that, he is also extremely powerful. He would actually be able to exploit all of Gremmy’s weaknesses, meaning that he would either overpower him with his enormous Spiritual Pressure or he would manipulate him into making a fatal error.
Gremmy Thoumeaux vs. Yhwach
As the leader of the Quincy who possesses all of the abilities inherent to the Quincy as a group, Ywhach is an exceptionally powerful character and someone who could easily defeat Gremmy Thoumeaux. The fact that Gremmy Thoumeaux is actually Yhwach’s subordinate speaks for itself. There is no way that Gremmy Thoumeaux could do anything against his ruler and, by all means, the one who gave him his powers.
Gremmy Thoumeaux vs. the other Sternritter
The Sternritter are a very diverse group, and Gremmy himself said he was the strongest among them. He also added that he never actually fought any of them because they knew they should stay away from him. He never really had a proper fight until Kenpachi came along and implied that all the other Sternritter feared him because of his power, but that wasn’t completely true.
Namely, while Gremmy’s power is truly amazing, a lot of the Sternritter could easily exploit its weaknesses, especially the members of the Schutzstaffel and As Nodt.
Gremmy Thoumeaux vs. Genryūsai Shigekuni Yamamoto
On numerous occasions, Yamamoto said that he was the strongest Shinigami in two millennia and has proven that to be true. He has amazing skills and powers, and the things he managed to survive are absolutely amazing.
Yhwach was the only one who managed to defeat him, but he used a vile trick to do it. As far as Gremmy is concerned, Yamamoto would simply slice him in two before the strange Sternritter would even have the chance to react. On top of that, Yamamoto’s power would be too much for Gremmy to handle.
Gremmy Thoumeaux vs. Kisuke Urahara
Urahara is probably the most intelligent character in the whole series and is as skilled as he is unpredictable. He is also enormously powerful, although he does look like a clog-and-hat-weating schumuck. He also has an incredibly powerful Bankai. A battle between him and Gremmy would be a true battle of wits and creativity, but Urahara is always so well prepared for a fight that he would probably come up with a solution for anything that Gremmy throws at him.
