‘Captain America: Brave New World’ Reportedly Faces More Changes After Third Round of Poor Test Screenings

Captain America: Brave New World is shaping up to be an exciting MCU project—at least on paper. The movie marks Sam Wilson’s first solo outing as Captain America, where he’ll face off against Thaddeus Ross’ Red Hulk, played by Harrison Ford.
However, the film’s development has been rocky, with controversies, reshoots, and poor test screenings causing delays. Now, it seems more changes are on the way after yet another test screening reportedly didn’t go well.
This update comes from industry insider Daniel Richtman, who shared the news through his paid subscription on X (formerly Twitter).
The movie has a history of poor test screenings, and recently, its entire plot was leaked online, sparking a wave of negative reactions. While the exact reasons for the latest criticism weren’t detailed, it seems like the same issues are coming up again. Let’s break it down from the start.
Remember the big reshoots over the summer? Those reportedly added $100 million to the budget and were meant to address complaints from the first test screenings.
Test audiences had said the movie’s political message felt dull and uninspiring. They also found the action less exciting compared to earlier Captain America films, and Anthony Mackie’s chemistry with his romantic co-star didn’t land well.
On top of that, some reports suggest the reshoots were so expensive because they added references to the World War Hulk storyline.
There’s also the controversy surrounding Sabra, a Jewish superhero with a background in Mossad. The backlash started when her role in the movie was first announced, and tensions grew after reports of major reshoots. Fans were upset to learn that Sabra remained in the film despite the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict, fueling even more debate.
When Sabra appeared in the Captain America: Brave New World trailer, many fans reacted angrily, with some even threatening to boycott the movie. Fans had hoped her origin would be changed, as her MCU description portrays her as a former Black Widow and a close ally of President Thaddeus Ross, without mentioning her Israeli background or Mossad ties.
This sparked accusations that Marvel was erasing her Israeli origins. Some insiders claim Marvel caved to the pressure and removed all references to her military or espionage background.
A couple of weeks ago, another test screening took place. The studio reportedly added Amadeus Cho, played by Logan Kim, to the film. Around this time, the entire plot leaked online, triggering yet another wave of negative reactions.
Two different cuts of the film test screened last week, and plot details for one of the cuts have leaked online. The person who attended didn’t seem to like the movie all that much.
Based on the folks I’ve spoken to, those who attended were either given a red or green bracelet and were split up into two different theaters. The reactions I’ve heard have not been very kind to this movie, which is being described as “inessential” and “flat.
Of course, this information hasn’t been officially confirmed, as no studio would openly admit their movie is in major trouble so close to release. We’ll likely get confirmation (or have it debunked) when the movie hits theaters worldwide on February 14th, 2025.
