‘Captain Marvel’ Tie-In Series Canceled After 10 Issues – Is the Movie to Blame?

The Marvels’ was released about nine months ago and now feels like a distant memory to MCU fans. The movie was both a commercial and critical failure, losing a significant amount of money for the studio. Despite its lack of impact on the larger MCU storyline, it initiated some major changes within the studio.

In response to the film’s poor reception, the MCU announced a shift in focus from quantity to quality, significantly reducing its future output. There are also insider rumors that the movie’s failure led to the cancellation of plans for ‘Captain Marvel 3’ and Monica Rambeau’s standalone TV series, although these remain unconfirmed.

The movie appears to have had significant repercussions in the world of comics as well, particularly affecting the ‘Captain Marvel’ series intended as a tie-in with the film.

The series highlighted key elements from the movie, including the new costume, Nega-Bands, and Danvers’ location-swapping, but it failed to achieve success. As a result, Marvel decided to cancel the series after just 10 issues.

On the letters page of ‘Captain Marvel #10,’ editor Sarah Brunstad explained the situation to the fans:

“Ah, dear friends. Here we part, for a short time. Captain Marvel stories will continue in the gangbuster Avengers series and elsewhere (check out the new ongoing Avengers Academy, Marvel Unlimited subscribers!). But her solo series needs a hiatus while we build the next great story. Keep the faith, True Believer. Keep the Corps strong. We’ll see you soon.

Series writer Alyssa Wong also shared a heartfelt message with the fans:

“What a wild ride! I’ve had so much fun writing Carol, Yuna, and some true cosmic weirdness. From place-swapping shenanigans to body horror, high-stakes heists to quiet, powerful moments, it’s been an absolute blast(aar). And you’ve been with us every step of the way! Thank you for your love and enthusiasm. Every time I read your letters, they make my day. You are all True Believers..but more than that, thank you for believing in this story, this team, and all of us. I can’t wait to see where Carol’s journey takes her next!

Captain Marvel will continue to appear in other series, notably ‘Avengers,’ but there are currently no plans for a solo series. Perhaps this could change if the character gains more popularity. Similarly, the ‘She-Hulk’ series has concluded its brief run, with no plans to continue the character in a standalone series at this time.
