At one point Casper was so famous that Harvey Comics purchased him back in 1959 and he soon took over their comics as their most famous character. Casper had many appearances in various media since his inception in 1939, and today we will be dealing with Casper movies. Let’s see what is the order of Casper movies and how many are there.

There are currently 5 Casper movies not counting numerous animated spinoff series and other media. A sequel for the original Casper movies released in 1995 was planned, but ultimately Casper 2 was canceled due to poor reception straight-to-video films received. Christina Ricci, star of the first movie, was also hesitant to return to the sequel which ultimately doomed the project to failure.

The best way to watch Casper movies is in chronological order. All movies were released between 1997 and 1998. are in a way prequel movies to the Casper movie from 1995. It’s important to note though that the subsequent movies generally do not follow the timeline nor the events that the first movie set as canon. For instance, the first Casper movie shows Casper in his human form and explains the manner in which he died, Casper: A Spirited Beginning (1997) which should serve as a prequel to that movie completely ignores the events of the first movie and sets its own narrative.

Casper: A Spirited Beginning (1997) was directed by Sean McNamara. Despite it being straight to video film, it had a great cast of numerous big names in the industry such as Steve Guttenberg, Lori Loughlin, Rodney Dangerfield, Michael McKean, James Earl Jones, and Pauly Shore.

The movie revolves around a friendly ghost named Casper who recently joined the world of the dead but fails to show up for his training at Ghost Central, he befriends a human boy obsessed with the supernatural who attempts to teach him how to be a good ghost. Casper’s overlord from the world, Kibosh, figures out Casper is missing and attempts to bring him back. 

2. Casper Meets Wendy (1998)

Casper Meets Wendy (1998) was once again directed by Sean McNamara. The movie is a sequel to 1997. movie and stars 11-year-old Hillary Duff in the role of a witch Wendy.

The premise of the movie revolves around Casper who is at the moment living with his uncles, the ghostly trio. Casper is rather disappointed with his existence and cannot relate to the stereotype of an evil ghost whose purpose in life is to scare people. He befriends a young witch Wendy, who likewise has trouble fitting in with the stereotype of an evil witch. To make matters even more complicated, Wendy’s family is being hunted by Desmond Spellman, a powerful warlock. Wendy and Casper devise a plan to bring their two families together and stop the Desmon Spellman forever.

3. Casper (1995)

Casper was directed by Brad Silberling and has a great cast of actors such as Christina Ricci, Bill Pullman, Cathy Moriarty, and Eric Idle, with Malachi Pearson voicing the titular character Casper. Casper 1995 is regarded as the best movie in the Casper franchise. The movie shows how Casper died and explains how he came to be “the friendly ghost” it’s also the only movie that shows him in his human form. Even though Casper is shown as dying from pneumonia in this movie the event wasn’t referenced in the prequel movies at all, making the timeline a bit messy. 

Casper (1995) follows a supernatural afterlife therapist Dr. James Harvey (Bill Pullman) who moves into a haunted manor with his teenage daughter Kat (Christina Ricci) in order to cleanse the place of the evil spirits. Kat befriends Casper and she finds herself on a path to help the ghosts haunting the manor cross over to the other side.

4. Casper’s Haunted Christmas (2000)

Casper’s Haunted Christmas (2000) was the first fully animated movie in the Casper franchise. It was directed by Owen Hurley and features a great cast of voice actors.

Casper’s Haunted Christmas once again follows Casper and his master from the world of the dead Kibosh. Kibosh puts Casper on a specific assignment, in order to prove how much of a ghost he is he needs to scare someone on Christmas Eve, or else Casper and his ghostly trio of uncles will be sentenced to spend eternity in The Dark. 

5. Casper’s Scare School (2006)

Casper’s Scare School (2006) was the second fully animated movie directed by Mark Gravas. Like the previous movies, the fifth movie also rests on the premise of Casper being overall a lousy ghost unable to do his “tasks” successfully.

Casper still has trouble scaring people and due to that, he is attending classes in Scare School where he befriends similar “monsters” a mummy named Ra and Mantha, a good-natured zombie. The trio is connected by their general mild attitude and friendly nature. Casper eventually discovers that the school’s headmaster has a plan to conquer the world and the trio tries to stop him.

Casper (1995) and Casper: A Spirited Beginning (1997) can be watched on Amazon Prime. Unfortunately, the rest of the movies can only be found on DVDs and are not available for streaming.

Do you need to watch Casper movies in order? 

Casper movies should be watched in order even though some of the events such as Casper’s origin story had been retconned in the later movies. The second two movies are generally known as the prequels to the first Casper movies in 1995. 

Are Casper movies connected?

Yes, Casper movies are connected. All movies follow the same titular character Casper and generally revolve around his inability to perform his ghostly duties. The characters are the same and the first three movies are directly connected while the last two movies can be watched in no particular order since their story is more of a standalone event. 

Is Casper in the same universe as Ghostbusters? 

There’s no reason to think that Casper is not in the same universe as Ghostbusters. The whole idea of the two franchises being connected dates back to the first Casper movie from 1995. where Dan Acroyd has a cameo appearance as Raymond “Ray” Stantz. Will there be more Casper movies?

So far, we’re not sure whether there will be more Casper movies. The sequel for the original movie was planned, Casper 2, but the project never came to fruition due to Bill Pullman and Christina Ricci being involved with other projects. The future objectively does not look bright for the franchise considering the generally poor reviews the movie franchise has received.
