CCH Pounder Just Shut Down Any Chance of an ‘ER’ Return to ‘The Pitt’

The medical drama genre has been having a moment thanks to ‘The Pitt,’ the HBO Max series that turned Noah Wyle’s return to a hospital setting into one of the most talked about shows on television. Built by former ‘ER’ veterans John Wells and R. Scott Gemmill, the series has leaned into nostalgia by quietly weaving in familiar faces from the beloved ’90s drama, giving longtime fans plenty of easter eggs along the way.

That approach has worked well for stars like Katherine LaNasa and Shawn Hatosy, both of whom transitioned from ‘ER’ guest roles into award winning parts on ‘The Pitt.’ Their success has fueled speculation about which other alumni might eventually walk through the doors of Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center, with fans regularly floating wishlists of familiar names.

CCH Pounder will not be one of them. According to an exclusive interview with ScreenRant’s Ben Gibbons, the actress who played Dr. Angela Hicks during ‘ER’ first four seasons made it clear she has no interest in appearing on ‘The Pitt.’ Pounder called the new series “wonderful” and acknowledged it operates in “the same arena” as ‘ER,’ but she was blunt about her reasoning for staying away.

She compared the idea to settling for less than what she once had, telling ScreenRant, “I keep saying, when you’ve had a steak, don’t go looking for hamburgers.” Pounder added that the setup felt “a lazy setup” in her opinion, pointing out that ‘The Pitt’ centers heavily on Wyle’s Dr. Robby, whereas ‘ER’ was built as more of an ensemble piece before splintering into storylines focused on a handful of lead characters.

Pounder also expressed discomfort with becoming part of a broader comparison conversation between the two shows, saying she does not want to be dragged into debates about which series “did it first” or did it better. As someone who exited ‘ER’ as an established attending physician rather than a patient or family member, she noted that stepping into ‘The Pitt’ in a lesser role would feel like a step backward for her character legacy.

Her comments stand in contrast to other ‘ER’ veterans who have embraced cameos, including Mary McCormack, whose season two turn as chief neurosurgeon Dr. Linda Conley marked a warm reunion with Wyle and Wells. Wyle himself has previously said he would “never say never” to more crossover casting, even as he has downplayed the idea of chasing big names purely for stunt value.

With ‘The Pitt’ gearing up for a wintry third season, the door remains open for more surprise faces from the Cook County General days, even if Pounder will not be walking through it. Given how firmly she has closed the book on a comeback, do fans think ‘The Pitt’ is missing something by not bringing back more of the original ‘ER’ ensemble, or does Pounder have a point about leaving well enough alone?
