Chris Evans Returns in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ – What If He’s the MCU’s Deadliest Villain, And Not a Hero?
Avengers: Doomsday is currently the most highly anticipated MCU movie. After the Infinity Saga, it will bring together a new team of Avengers to face one of the franchise’s most iconic villains: Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom.
However, RDJ isn’t the only familiar face making a return. According to Variety, Chris Evans is also set to appear in Doomsday, though his role is still under wraps. While it seems likely Evans will reprise his role as Captain America, there may be a surprising twist in store.
Hear us out: Steve Rogers isn’t dead in the MCU, he’s simply retired, choosing to live with Peggy in an alternate timeline. The mantle of Captain America was passed to Sam Wilson, who will star in his first solo film, Captain America: Brave New World, releasing on February 14, 2025.
It seems unlikely that the MCU will revisit Steve Rogers’ Captain America storyline while Sam Wilson is still establishing himself. Chris Evans probably won’t return as Captain America or any variant, but could instead play the Beyonder—someone who will appear as Captain America.
A few weeks ago, we reported a casting rumor suggesting that the studio might be casting the Beyonder, especially given the connection to the original Secret Wars and Time Runs Out storylines, which Avengers: Doomsday may be based on.
The rumors about the Beyonder appearing in Avengers: Secret Wars are not new. Ever since Secret Wars was announced, insiders hinted that the Beyonder would be revealed as the main villain.
It’s possible that Chris Evans will play the Beyonder, who has shapeshifted to look like Captain America—something that happened in the comics. In Secret Wars II, after arriving on Earth, the Beyonder took on physical forms based on various participants from the first “Secret War” to better understand humanity. He adopted the bodies of the Molecule Man and Captain America to experience human life, seeking wealth, pleasure, and power, but ultimately finding it all empty.
Eventually, the Beyonder took control of Earth’s minds and matter but quickly grew bored of ruling and released everyone, erasing memories of his actions except for a few faint recollections.
It’s possible that the MCU could follow this storyline, with Chris Evans portraying the Beyonder in Doomsday before the real Beyonder reveals his true form in Secret Wars.
This theory is definitely intriguing and could add an emotional layer to the story, especially if the former Avengers recognize his face. This could lead them to make rash decisions, unaware that the Beyonder is already among them, as he’s not yet been introduced into the MCU.
