Chris Mundy Set as DCU’s ‘Lanterns’ Showrunner

After ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom,’ the DCEU ended, and Gunn’s and Safran’s DCU took over as the main cinematic universe for DC characters. Among the projects in development under Chapter 1: Gods & Monsters is a live-action show called ‘Lanterns,’ focusing on Green Lanterns.
Initially, Geoff Johns had a script for a Green Lantern Corps film set in the DCEU, aiming for a 2019 release. But plans changed when it was announced in April 2020 that Johns would produce a Green Lantern Corps series for HBO Max, indicating a shift in direction. Efforts were made to distance the series from the CW’s Arrowverse, possibly to attract viewers uninterested in its lower-budget productions.
Originally set for a 2021 release, Seth Grahame-Smith took over as showrunner in October 2020, with Geoff Johns’ involvement decreasing. The series was planned to have ten episodes, written by Grahame-Smith and Marc Guggenheim, and produced by Berlanti Productions. Confirmed characters included Guy Gardner, Jessica Cruz, Simon Baz, Alan Scott, Sinestro, and Kilowog.
The show underwent a major overhaul to fit into the upcoming DCU. Currently, ‘Lanterns’ is produced by Gunn and Safran, with Damon Lindelof involved, and Chris Mundy serving as the showrunner according to recent production listings. Mundy’s notable works include ‘Ozark,’ ‘Criminal Minds,’ ‘Low Winter Sun,’ and the latest season of ‘True Detective.’
The show’s details are still largely under wraps, but it’s said to be a cosmic detective tale. Three well-known Green Lanterns—Hal Jordan, John Stewart, and Guy Gardner—will feature in the series, with Nathan Fillion confirmed to portray Guy Gardner. Interestingly, Fillion’s debut as Gardner will be in the upcoming ‘Superman: Legacy.’ Want to share your thoughts? Drop a comment below!
