‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Is Reportedly Ending for Good, and the Timing Couldn’t Be Messier

Marvel’s television slate has been in a state of constant flux this year, with cancellations, showrunner shuffles, and shifting release strategies becoming almost routine at this point. Few shows, though, have weathered quite as many behind-the-scenes upheavals as Matt Murdock’s return to Disney+.

‘Daredevil: Born Again‘ has always felt like a series fighting an uphill battle, reworking its creative direction more than once before ever finding its footing with audiences. Even after finally settling into a groove with critics and fans alike, stability has remained elusive behind the camera.

Now comes word that the show’s third season, which just wrapped filming roughly two months ago, will be its last. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the series is ending, and the news arrives alongside confirmation that showrunner Dario Scardapane is exiting the production in the middle of post-production after his contract was not renewed.

This isn’t the first major creative shake-up ‘Born Again’ has endured. The series was originally greenlit back in July 2022 with Matt Corman and Chris Ord serving as head writers, envisioning a lighter, more episodic tone than the gritty Netflix original that preceded it.

Production came to a halt during the 2023 industry strikes, and Marvel used that pause to execute a full creative reset. Corman and Ord exited the project, and Scardapane, previously a writer and executive producer on Netflix’s ‘The Punisher,’ was brought in to steer the show closer to the darker, more serialized tone longtime fans had originally loved.

That gamble largely paid off critically, with both released seasons earning stronger reception than the show’s rocky start suggested was possible. Which makes the timing of Scardapane’s departure, right as the final season heads toward completion, all the more surprising to those close to the production.

With Scardapane gone mid-post-production, it remains unclear who will actually oversee the season through to completion. One source close to the situation indicated that post-production work is already in its final stages, which may limit how much influence any replacement could realistically have on the finished product.

Scardapane addressed the end of filming himself just two months ago, sharing a heartfelt note on Instagram after cameras wrapped. “Thank you to Marvel and the magnificent cast and crew that made this season something very, very, very special,” he wrote at the time. “I’m humbled daily by the talent I get to work with.”

The final season is currently expected to arrive on Disney+ in 2027, and as of now, there’s nothing else on the books for the Daredevil corner of the MCU beyond that. It marks a quiet, somewhat anticlimactic end for a character who’s now been through three separate live-action revivals across two different platforms.

The cancellation isn’t happening in isolation. Disney+ also recently opted not to renew ‘Wonder Man’ for a second season, and Marvel’s overall live-action television output has been noticeably thinning out in recent months, even as reports suggest the studio continues developing new projects behind the scenes.

For a franchise that once seemed unstoppable in expanding its television footprint, the current moment feels like a real inflection point. Whether Marvel finds a way to give ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ the send-off it deserves, or whether the constant behind-the-scenes turbulence ultimately shows in the finished product, remains to be seen.
