‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Reportedly Almost Killed Off Foggy – Here’s Why I Think That’s Still Going to Happen
Daredevil: Born Again faced significant development challenges, originally conceived as a courtroom drama with minimal action from Daredevil. However, in late September 2023, after filming six out of the planned 18 episodes, Marvel Studios decided to shift the show’s direction.
As a result, the original head writers, Corman and Ord, along with the other directors, were dismissed after executives reviewed the footage and concluded that the series “wasn’t working.
Their approach to Daredevil: Born Again was quite different from the Netflix version, resulting in Charlie Cox not appearing as Daredevil until the fourth episode. Marvel intended to retain some of the footage already filmed while incorporating new elements to align more closely with the tone of the original Netflix series.
Fans were disappointed to learn that Elden Henson’s Foggy and Deborah Ann Woll’s Karen would not be part of the reboot. This sparked considerable backlash, particularly when insider reports indicated plans to kill off these characters between the events of Netflix’s Daredevil and Born Again.
Ultimately, the show was scrapped and reshot, leading to excitement among fans when it was announced that both Karen and Foggy were written back into the script, with the two actors spotted on set. However, there is a significant caveat.
Insider reports suggest that either Karen or Foggy is still set to die within the first few episodes. Recently leaked set videos support this rumor, as one clip shows Karen kneeling over what appears to be Foggy’s lifeless (or unconscious) body.
Foggy might still be “killed off” in the show for maximum emotional impact, but he won’t be gone for good. It also presents one of the most compelling storylines for Foggy that the MCU can adapt.
The Devil in Cell-Block D by Ed Brubaker gives the MCU a chance to raise the stakes for Daredevil, pushing him into a state of anger and bitterness while setting up an incredible twist for Foggy.
In this story, Matt is outed as Daredevil by the media and ends up in prison. During a visit from Foggy and private investigator Dakota North, Foggy is attacked by several inmates and seriously injured.
Matt can hear his friend’s heartbeat fading, and Foggy is later pronounced dead after being rushed away in an ambulance. Murdock attends Foggy’s funeral, where Foggy’s mother, Rosalind Sharpe, holds him responsible for her son’s death.
It was later revealed that Foggy had not actually died but had been placed in the FBI’s witness protection program, where he was recovering and starting a new life. In a bid to reunite with Matt, he attempted to escape but was captured by the mafia. However, the mafia was soon eliminated by ninjas from the Hand, who were acting under Elektra’s orders.
The ninjas returned Foggy to his original captors, warning him that they would be keeping an eye on him.
Eventually, Foggy was released and reunited with Matt Murdock. They decided to move their law office and operate on a referral-only basis to avoid drawing attention from Daredevil’s enemies, with Becky Blake joining them as a new partner.
While it’s unclear if this storyline will be adapted, there are hints that support this theory, especially from set videos showing Foggy seemingly dead and the presence of Vanessa Fisk.
Ayelet Zurer was spotted on set as well, and her character will likely have strong ties to Kingpin, but Vanessa also played a significant role in Foggy faking his own death.
In the story, Vanessa falls seriously ill and decides to settle all her “debts.” From afar, she masterminded the events that led to the arrests of both Matt Murdock and her husband, Wilson Fisk, including faking Foggy’s death and hiring Iron Fist to pose as Daredevil in Hell’s Kitchen.
Having Iron Fist take on Daredevil’s identity ties in well with the rumors of his potential appearance in the MCU!
Vanessa also manipulated Tombstone and Lily Lucca to send Murdock on a revenge-fueled journey across Europe against Daredevil and Wilson for her circumstances.
