Dave Filoni Just Revealed His Master Plan for Uniting Every Generation of Star Wars Fans
Few franchises carry as much generational baggage as ‘Star Wars,’ where decades of sequels, prequels, and spin-offs have created distinct pockets of fandom that don’t always see eye to eye. Managing that fractured audience has become one of the trickiest challenges facing Lucasfilm’s new leadership.
That challenge fell squarely on Dave Filoni’s shoulders earlier this year, when he stepped into his role as Lucasfilm co-president alongside ILM’s Lynwen Brennan, following Kathleen Kennedy’s exit after fourteen years running the studio. With the franchise approaching its 60th anniversary next year, every public comment from Filoni has been closely scrutinized for hints about where things go from here.
Speaking at a D23 panel tied to Leslie Iwerks’ new documentary “Worldbuilders,” Filoni finally laid out his guiding philosophy for the franchise’s future. “We have several different generations of Star Wars fans, right?” Filoni explained. “There’s original trilogy fans, prequel fans, sequel trilogy fans, Clone Wars fans, expanded universe fans. They all have different interests. And I always look at how we’re going to serve all these different interests. And most importantly, how do we bring them all together because they have this common love of Star Wars.”
Predictably, those comments haven’t landed uniformly across the fanbase. Some online reactions have pushed back against the very idea of grouping fans this way, with a notable segment of commenters seemingly dismissing the notion that sequel trilogy fans represent a meaningful, distinct audience within the broader Star Wars community.
That kind of divided reaction has become something of a pattern whenever Filoni discusses his vision publicly, reflecting just how contentious different eras of the franchise remain among its most passionate followers. Rather than shying away from that tension, Filoni’s stated approach seems to embrace it directly, framing the diversity of fan interests as something to actively design around rather than smooth over.
Filoni’s credentials for taking on this balancing act run deep. He worked directly alongside George Lucas on “The Clone Wars,” later collaborating with Jon Favreau on “The Mandalorian,” and served as showrunner on “Ahsoka” before his elevation to Chief Creative Officer back in November 2023.
That history has earned him considerable goodwill among longtime fans and collaborators alike. Mark Hamill publicly endorsed Filoni’s new leadership role, telling USA Today he “can’t think of better hands” for the franchise to be in, crediting Filoni’s direct mentorship under Lucas as giving him a genuine understanding of the saga’s original sensibility.
Filoni has also recently addressed how this philosophy applies to specific upcoming projects. He’s noted that “The Mandalorian and Grogu” doesn’t carry the same weight of expectation that came with introducing a brand-new sequel trilogy entry like “The Force Awakens,” describing the franchise as operating in “a completely different era” now.
That framing suggests Filoni sees value in letting individual projects breathe without forcing them to satisfy every corner of the fanbase simultaneously. With “The Mandalorian and Grogu” set for May 2027, alongside Ryan Gosling’s “Star Wars: Starfighter” arriving just days later that same month, these two releases represent some of the only currently confirmed dates among a long list of announced Star Wars projects still in various stages of development.
Whether Filoni’s stated goal of uniting all these fractured fan groups actually succeeds remains to be seen, especially given how quickly his own comments have already reignited old debates about which era of the franchise deserves priority. Still, his approach at least signals a deliberate attempt to acknowledge the franchise’s complicated history rather than pretend any single era speaks for the whole fanbase.
As Lucasfilm heads toward Star Wars’ 60th anniversary next year, Filoni’s ability to actually deliver on this unifying vision will likely become one of the defining tests of his new leadership role.
Do you think Dave Filoni can actually unite all generations of Star Wars fans?
