DC Studios Allegedly Considers Two Backup Options if Brolin Passes on Hal Jordan Role
Yesterday, intriguing rumors surfaced suggesting that DC Studios is strongly considering Josh Brolin for the role of Hal Jordan in the upcoming series “Lanterns.” According to multiple insider sources, the 56-year-old actor is the studio’s top choice, but he has yet to accept the offer, and the news has been kept under tight wraps.
The “Lanterns” series is expected to focus on three prominent members of the Green Lantern Corps: Guy Gardner, John Stewart, and Hal Jordan. So far, Nathan Fillion is the only confirmed Lantern in the DC Universe, having already appeared on the set of “Superman.”
All indications suggest that “Lanterns” will be a cosmic detective story, with Hal Jordan serving as a mentor to John Stewart. The studio is reportedly searching for a high-profile, younger actor to portray Stewart, but there’s been some controversy over the age of the actors considered for Hal Jordan. Many fans have voiced concerns that Josh Brolin, despite being the rumored first choice, might be too old for the role, even as a mentor. The initial reactions to Brolin’s potential casting were not particularly positive.
According to Jeff Sneider via his newsletter, the studio is now considering two more notable actors in case Brolin declines the role. The first is Ewan McGregor, best known for playing Obi-Wan Kenobi in the “Star Wars” franchise. However, McGregor, at 53, might also be seen as too old for the part.
The second actor reportedly in consideration is Matthew McConaughey, recognized for his performances in “Magic Mike,” “Interstellar,” “Dallas Buyers Club,” “Mud,” and many other hits. McConaughey is a big name, and his casting would certainly be an intriguing choice. Yet, at 54, he is also older than many fans expected.
Given the ages of these actors, it seems DC Studios is leaning towards a more mature Hal Jordan, sparking speculation that the character may be retiring or possibly dying by the end of the series.
