The Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards have always been the gold standard for excellence in comics, and the 2026 nominations carry a clear message: DC’s bold creative gamble is paying off in a very big way. Now in their 38th year, the Eisners recognise the best publications and creators across roughly 32 categories, with winners chosen by eligible comics industry professionals through an online ballot. This year, the nominations doubled as a referendum on DC’s ambitious publishing slate, and the verdict from the judging panel is hard to argue with.

The Absolute Universe, DC’s sweeping reimagining of its most iconic characters, has been one of the most talked-about creative initiatives in superhero comics since its launch. Stripping beloved heroes down to new, grounded interpretations, the line represented a significant creative swing from the publisher, and it has clearly resonated with readers and critics alike. The nominations reflect just how thoroughly that creative energy translated into quality on the page.

DC Comics led the 2026 Eisner field with 16 nominations for its titles and 10 shared nominations, with ‘Absolute Martian Manhunter’ earning the most nods of any single comic at six categories, followed closely by ‘Absolute Batman‘ with five. That level of recognition for titles that are still relatively young in their runs speaks to the immediate and lasting impression the Absolute line has made on the industry. Writer Deniz Camp led all individual creators with five total nominations, earning nods for Best Limited Series, Best New Series, two for Best Single Issue, and Best Writer.

Image Comics came in second among publishers with 12 nominations and nine shared, with strong showings from Deniz Camp and Eric Zawadski’s ‘Assorted Crisis Events’ and James Tynion IV’s ‘Department of Truth’. Marvel, by contrast, made a noticeably quieter appearance in the field. Image Comics nabbed 12 nominations and nine shared, while Marvel pulled in just three nominations and five shared. For a publisher of Marvel’s scale, that gap in recognition underscores just how dominant DC’s creative output was throughout 2025.

Scott Snyder received a nomination for his work on ‘Absolute Batman’, with artist Nick Dragotta also earning recognition for the series, including the ‘Absolute Batman’ 2025 Annual and the ‘Batman’ main title. The creative partnership between Snyder and Dragotta has become one of the defining collaborations in superhero comics right now, and the Eisner judges have taken notice.

The winners will be announced at a gala ceremony at the San Diego Hilton Bayfront Hotel during Comic-Con on the evening of July 24. This year’s judging panel consisted of writer Regine Sawyer, librarian Jerry Dear, reviewer and journalist Tiffany Babb, comics retailer Katie Pryde, and comics scholar Randy Duncan. With voting already underway among industry professionals, the final results will be one of the most anticipated moments of the San Diego Comic-Con calendar this summer.

The 2026 Eisner nominations are a strong signal that DC’s creative reinvention has not just captured fan attention but earned the respect of the industry at its highest level, and the Absolute Universe still has plenty of story left to tell. Let us know in the comments which Absolute title you think deserves to take home the win at San Diego Comic-Con this July.
