Did James Gunn Just Confirm Robert Pattinson as Batman in the DC Universe?

James Gunn recently talked about what’s next for DC Studios and how some of the biggest heroes will fit into the new plans. In a chat with Entertainment Weekly, he confirmed that Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and Supergirl are the main characters right now. Gunn said, “I think that’s accurate, actually. I think that he [David Zaslav] got that from me… those four characters are incredibly important to us.”

Although these four are the current focus, Gunn made it clear that DC isn’t only about them, but those are the ones they’re paying the most attention to at the moment. He mentioned feeling confident about two of these heroes’ futures, while the other two are still being worked on.

When asked if the roles of Batman and Wonder Woman were already cast, Gunn said, “No… Well, we cast Robert Pattinson, so he is still there.” This suggests that Pattinson’s Batman could still be connected to the main DC Universe. Earlier, Gunn had hinted there were talks about Pattinson joining the DCU and said, “never say never.”

Gunn also highlighted that Matt Reeves’ Batman movies, including the upcoming sequel, remain an important part of DC’s strategy. He is eager to see the new script, saying, “What Matt’s doing is still really important, despite all stories to the contrary.”

This raised questions about how DC plans to handle multiple storylines. Gunn and Peter Safran want the DC Universe (DCU) to feel connected, but they also allow some stories, like Reeves’ Batman films and the Penguin series, to exist separately as Elseworlds projects.

Gunn explained that the DCU will be the main focus, but there will still be room for Elseworlds tales when it makes sense to tell them. He gave the example of animated shows, which don’t always follow the same rules as the main universe. For the core DCU, things like character powers and cities need to stay consistent. He said, “We aren’t the regular world; we’re the DCU. There isn’t necessarily Seattle, but there’s an Evergreen. There isn’t necessarily a New York, but there’s a Gotham.”

He also talked about balancing creative freedom with quality control. Gunn praised Matt Reeves for creating movies that are both big and artistic, saying, “You have to stand up and listen.” But Gunn emphasized that a project won’t move forward unless the script is good.

He shared a story about a famous actor who pitched an Elseworlds story, telling the actor, “It depends on how the screenplay comes out… If it’s a masterpiece, I’ll make it, but it has to be a masterpiece.” The actor wasn’t sure if it would be, but they’re still working on it.

Gunn ended by saying that DC wants to be clear about what belongs to the DCU and what is Elseworlds. He also stressed that the studio won’t just give away characters to small shows without keeping quality in check. “It is having some sense of quality control over everything,” he said.

From my perspective, it looks like James Gunn is trying to build a clearer, stronger DC Universe while still giving room to creative stories outside the main line. This focus on quality and consistency could help fans feel more confident about upcoming DC projects. What do you think about Robert Pattinson’s place in the DCU and the studio’s plans?
